hi people, any ideas please?, my gear selector light stays on very dimley when i turn the engine off and take the key out. it only goes off properly if its in sports mode and i take the gey out. i have swaped it for another one off ebay and it does the same thing. please can someone help. i dont use the car all the time and its left outside the house. last christmas i had to swap the battery as it was f@cked. i dont know if the battery drain was related due to this.

The BECM is not going to sleep, first place to look especially as you have been having battery drain is the RF receiver which is the usual culprit for keeping the BECM awake. The other place to look is the under bonnet fuse box for signs/smells of burning.
I doubt it is the BECM itself that is at fault, it gets the blame for a lot of things when the problem lies elswhere.

ive replaced the reciever last year so i know thats ok, how do i check if the becm is going to sleep or not? and how can you check the xyz swich?

look in the window of a night about 15 mins after you lock it, that little red light tells you if it not asleep. where did you get your new rf box from? are you sure it is the new one..

yes its the new one, i know there are 3 types and the one i bought was the latest. i dont think the receiver is the problem. i will try looking at the light fifteen minutes after i lock it. all i know is that it is very dim but it is on when i get out of the car unless it is in sport mode, then it goes off with the engine.

your becm is staying awake, are you parking on your drive way? if you are try moving it on to the road see if it goes to sleep. failing that i would take the blue wire off your rf box..

so why does it go off normaly when it in sports mode? it just seems strange that it sleeps in sports and stays awake in normal

all fuses are fine and theres no burning, anyone got any ideas please, what is with the xyz switch ? how do i tell if its faulty ? what are the symptoms? how do i check it?

Did you pull the relays and check them? It's not likely to be the XYZ switch, if you get the correct lights as you move the gear lever from
P to 1 then the switch is working correctly.
The only reason that the light will stay on dimly is the BECM being kept awake or possibly a wiring problem or as already mentioned a fuse box problem.

This might sound odd but, are the mirrors connected in any way to the gears? The reason I ask is, someone took my mirror out as they drove past. I replaced it but it only moves left and right now and not up and down. If the wiring is damaged could it be related?

If the mirror worked before being taken out, then either it's damage caused by the accident or something you did fitting the new one. I suppose you have good battery voltage?

any more on this, have the same thing i noticed, doesnt bother me but just curious. same situation, when i click it into sport it goes out. but then my manual bit it never illuminated (or do you switch it to that when its in a gear?)

mine does the same, not caused me any probs,YET.lol.I first noticed it after i took the centre console bits out to fit new bulbs in the heater controls,I thought i had clipped a wire or something but iv had it out again and couldnt see anything wrong.
my mechanic says its a new one on him,hes never seen it before.
