just put some barrs rad weld in will this have any affect on a leaking gasket, I suppose a new gasket is really the answer , what's the average cost when taken to a garage to do.

Fix the cause of the problem, not the symptoms.

cost of the gasket is about £2, takes about an hour.

unless yu get a sheared bolt in which case add another day or so .
