If your P-gasket hasn't been replaced before, you'll probably find it's perished... Looking from the nearside wing down behind the alternator you may see something like this...

Firstly dump the coolant from the engine, then remove all coolant hoses and the top intercooler hose from the top of the engine and thermostat housing, this gives you plenty of space to get at the rest of the job

Before removing the serpentine belt, try and crack the bolts holding the waterpump and steering pump pulleys

DSCF0460.jpg

I couldn't get the steering pump bolts to crack without the belt slipping, so I used a strap wrench to hold the pulley while I cracked the bolts.

DSCF0462.jpg

Completely remove the pulleys and you can now access all bolts holding the waterpump on, then remove waterpump

DSCF0463.jpg

Remove the four bolts marked with arrows and the power steering pump will be liberated

Pull the pump out of the way, and you can then turn your attention to the last three studs holding the waterpump housing to the engine.
A – is a nut
B – is a bolt
C – is a nut, attached to a bolt which you'll need to hold from underneath the alternator

DSCF0471A.jpg

Once these are undone you can pull the entire lot forwards to access the p-gasket, be careful not to strain the cables to the alternator

Clean off the old gasket then fit the new one with a smear of grease to hold it in place, you may wish to use gasket sealant – but I hate the stuff so I didn't!

Slide the waterpump housing back onto the studs and quickly insert one of the long waterpump bolts to hold the gasket in place
Refit the bolts and nuts to the housing and then refit the steering pump and waterpump (with new gasket)

Refit belt and all hoses and refill the coolant and t'jobs a fish!

Was thinking a mod may see it and do the deed without me needing to ask, thought it would be a useful one for folks and buster hasn't done this one!

Do yourself a favour and buy the original 'P'-gasket from your main dealer it is a metal coated thing and not the fail-prone paper one as seen in the photograph on this link. They are about £3.90.

Just like to say lerk what a fantastic post
you have placed about "P" gasket renewal
nice bit of work, pics all high res.
you get a pad on the back from me.
many thanks Chrissparky.
Ps in the middle of doing the head gasket
that has now turned into an engine overhall
due to finding more things amiss than than i
could shake a stick at, so changing the "P"
gasket while up to my armpits disco juice
seamed like a good idea? actually thanks to your
post it's not to bad a job.
thanks again Chris

It is actually a metalised gasket, just doesn't show well on the photo!

Don't suppose anybody has the part number for the core-plug? I went in to the LR dealer and the parts guy and I couldn't find it on any of the microcat drawings :-(

Also, if anyone has a disco 1 Haynes manual, would be very grateful for the torque settings for the housing, water pump and pulley bolts.

Cheers,

David

this is going to sound stupid but im still wet behind the ears in this department!! but what does changing the p gasket improve whats the need????
cheers

Awesome thread matey, thanks for taking the time to put it on here. Doing mine tomorrow and it's given me a good heads up!

Part number for the core plugs on 300TDi is ERC4996, the 53 mm ones. Just had to order, as my leaky P gasket turned out to be a leaky core plug...

If your doing one you might as well do them all!

Theres one behind the water pump/ps pump and tensioner housing, three down behind the turbo and one on the rear. Not sure if theres anymore.

Thanks for the clear photos and imformative write up all it cost was 99p for the gasket instead of £200 at the garage:D

Top thread, I just got mine orffff, waiting for bits to come then I canput it back together.

I wish I had read the bit about cracking off the nuts on the water pump and power steering pump pulleys before taking off the serpentine belt before I took my waterpump off last night, top tip.

Oh for f's sake... put in new pulleys and did the pee job whilst at it.
Smugly starting the lump up without the shrieking budgie was very cool.. till I noticed the pee gasket flooding coolant all over the place. I cleaned and fussed and was really well behaved, using one of those metal (!??!) jobbies from the local LR dealer. (Didn't need to remove steering pump tho)
Has anyone got any ideas as I'm feeling really downhearted now. I even used blue hylomar!
