Re: my V6, 51-plate, 63000 miles

I noticed a bit of steam coming from engine, but not enough to find where it was coming from. Found that it smelled of very hot antifreeze. Started fiddling around under the bonnet and I realised that the water pipes and the whole engine were very, very hot although the temp gauge reads normal and has never gone up too high in the 2 years I have owned it. Trouble is - I don't really know if this is heat level is normal. It's not really losing any water to speak of only a bit of a drip from around the water pump.

My normal mechanic (very good local garage - NOT Landrover dealer!) is away til next week but one of his lads has had a look. He first thought cylinder head(s) as there seemed to be a lot of pressure in the water system - water hoses pumped up rock hard. Again - I don't know if this pressure is normal or not? Then, having found the drip from around the water pump, he suggests that it might be that.

Temp gauge still normal, oil levels ok, electric fan comes on if it's left idling, no froth in the water which seems to be circulating ok but still smells very, very hot - the water pipes are too hot to touch. Runs and sounds lovely - still!

I am tip-toeing around in it and scared ****less.

Does anyone have any experience of this or could tell me how much of this is normal or how worried I should really be?

Well... disappointed that I got no replies or help but...

It seems like it may just be the water pump and not the head gaskets after all. Garage put some sealer solution in the water. That has stopped the leak AND the water system isn't pressurising up any more. Apparently a leaking water pump can draw air into the system which causes the pressure.

Getting the water pump replaced next week. Big-ish job as it requires speciallist tools (cheers Land Rover! ) so it's going to an independant LR speciallist as I would never darken a main dealers' door!

I'll see how I get on...

Exatcly the same sa mine not mine doesnt produce any steam. Dont know whether its normal or not but hopping some made any mods to lower the operating temp before mine goes burn...
