Changed the rad today on my 2.5 diesel,well what an easy job,easiest rad ive ever changed.
Old one seemed heavier to lift out but the core looked solid and good so I was a bit concerned but when i filled it up let it idle it soon got up to 12 o'clock and stayed there,fans didnt even click in after 20 mins so thatss it my problem solved.
In hindsight it was probably the rad "sludged" upp to high heaven.

Next job is to change the bushesin those hockey shapedd legs things on the front suspension but I'm getting there
 
I'll be tackling mine tomorrow (if the weather holds up) quick question, mines an auto and has two pipes coming out of the bottom of the rad, but I can see a seperate oil under the n/s/f bumper.

Hi Mick,mines an auto as well,the two pipes at the bottom of mine arent used Think iread on here that theyre used on the manual for gearbox cooling. My auto box oil is cooled by that small rad on the nsf like you have.
I had to undo the screws that hold the front grill on and then undo the four bolts that hold the front middle bit on and then remove it so I could wiggle the rad out.
As an aside what was yours doing on the overheat bit?
My rad came off ebay £113 qll in delivered with a 2 year warranty so time will tell I suppose.
Now i can get up to "normal" operating temperature,mine staarts no problem at all,I think with the stat out,the becm was registering that it wasnt cold and cutting the glow plugs out,even though the engine wassnt really warm so to speak. So far so good

Hope you did the "marble" test before fitting:)
 
Oh yes,tookk Datateks advice and checked the thermostat,just as well as it was duff brand new as well!!!!!!
Did the marble test as he said as well.
That mans a living legend you'd have to be a complete fool not to listen to what he says and then NOT do it
 
I could do about a mile then it would shoot up, so refill and it would be alright. Got on the motorway and it was overcooling.

Last weekend I stripped it down and there wasn't a thermostat in there, just the skeleton, so popped a new one in, changed the waterpump for good measure too. It warms up a lot better and stays around the half way mark but across the top of rad is very hot and the rest of it is cold.

I'm sure I've got two pipes coming out of the bottom, when I spotted them I thought it was strange, will find out tomorrow when I get underneath and have a good look, mines got front fogs so don't know if someone has messed with the pipework to get them in.

Thanks for the insight, as I say, will have a better idea when I can have a good look tomorrow, will update.

Now it's all working properly, you might like to consider the aircon fans mod and getting rid of the viscous fan.:)
 
Yep took my own advice and followed your advice,viscous gone,top capillary stat fitted and wired in ,including the manual overide switch,all good
