Hail one n all,
So I have been in and out of the forum for a few years now from my trusty Series 3 through the rather reliable Freelander two and now i'm on the TD5 Disco path .. or was.
To cut the long story short I bought a D2 (late one) all was going well until the first overheating incident caused by the heath robinson repair done to the heater feed pipe by the previous owner that I hadn't spotted, the pipe was split into three parts each being connected with a piece of metal tube all nicely hidden behind the engine block, one of these came loose and the coolant just flowed out whilst i was cruising on the autobahn and boom.

Ok recovered refitted hose clips, filled up with coolant and a week later .. the other end failed but this time it really overheated and i lost power, so i bought a piece of pipe and replaced the other with new .. all good except i can put a liter of coolant in a day, no sign of water in the oil, no white smoke but it keeps over heating.
Cut to this morning and another overheat, so removed the bleed screw, lifted the tank and filled until flowing from the bleed point. Started engine and noticed that the radiator top hose is under pressure very fast and there is a hissing from the expansion tank.
When i loosen the bleed screw i get an air coolant mixture when the engine is running ..

So my guess is head gasket or is there something i have missed?

Any help would be appreciated otherwise stand by for my first TD5 HG change adventure ( whilst the trouble n strife asks me why i bought another Land rover)

Head gasket leak test, try one of those first. Not that expensive, and it will tell you if there are combustion gases in the coolant.
 
Hi. I'm affraid you'll have to change the HG to rue it out 100% as a gas leak test can be irrelevant especially if you are loosing coolant cos it can be a crack which lets coolant out to the exhaust not gasses into the coolant... once the head is off better test that to make sure it's not cracked as well. Good luck
 
the fun has indeed started, I have got as far as being ready to remove the injectors .. i just need to find a you tube video to show me how but all the pipes and stuff are off
 
Yahoo got the head off with minimum struggle .. all cleaned up and ready to go back on only to discover that the two locating dowels are not included in the head gasket set ..
so a three day delay whilst 1 pounds worth of parts rather expensively makes its way here. ...

you did check the thermostat wasn't jammed shut?
didn't you?
And that the expansion tank cap was working as it should?
But do tend to think you are right re the gasket, although it'll be interesting to see where the watter is going.

Everywhere enough and there was evidence of a head gasket quick fix, being a lot of blue silicon type material around, mostly near the thin part of the head between cylinders.
the head removal was hampered by that last piece of sound proofing plastic cowel on the back of the head and the long stud front right preventing a smooth lift, wonder if anyone else puts all that plastic back on?

Swapped out the thermostat, no didn't think about the tank and the cap ..

To EGR or not EGR? man that thing is dirty but swiss MOT law will for sure prevent it being blanked off
Do i get a hoist or use the bush mechanics crane?
I would post photos but i cant seem to get it to work ..
