I know someone out there has a recommendation:
I bought a Clarke pillar drill at Christmas. One of the main reasons for
wanting it was the ability to accurately drill smallish holes for
electronics projects (<2mm dia., centre +/- 0.25mm). The bearings appear
good enough but the chuck is rubbish. Even if I put a pin chuck in, it
simply won't grip consistently etc. and it wanders all over the place.
I'm pretty certain it's the chuck at fault, as the scroll is really hard
to do up (despite lots of oil) and catches in several places. It's
basically cheap'n'nasty, but I wasn't expecting perfection at the price!
So I need a Morse tapered replacement. I've been on the toolmakers' shop
sites and am thoroughly bewildered by everything on offer, so I need a
bit of advice/help:
Where can I find a decent (but not ultra-precision) MT chuck that'll do
for general small work, and how much should I realistically expect to
pay? Are there reliable general-purpose brands to look for (not the CNC
hi-tech sort - haven't bottomless pockets!)?
BTW, the quill is MT2 and the chuck has the corresponding short female
MT on the back (can't remember what that's called, but YKWIM), so I
already have the MT2->chuck adaptor if necessary (and it appears
reasonably true).
Any thoughts (apart from "don't start from there") appreciated!
Regards,
Simonm.
