OK Landy Lovers, opinions sought!
I have a lovely 2011 4.4 V8 L322 Range Rover with 108,000 on the clock and want to change it. It has always had a LR used warranty on it until last year when it clicked over 100k so it has never gone without!
I tow a twin-axle caravan.
I love the RR but if I replace it, I will be spending £40k plus on a depreciating car.
My thought was to get a late 2014/2015 Defender 110 as it will not depreciate anywhere near as quickly, possibly even go up.
Have I totally lost the plot or am I a clever dick?
Comments please............

Why would a late 110 go up in price?
A local van hire place had a few 110s and 90s, lost on all of them lately.
Personally I don't see them gaining money, at some point they will start being a liability with all the ecomentalist rules.

If you like the RR, keep it. A 110 is a great tow vehicle but it doesn’t have the comforts of the RR, especially if you’re towing a large caravan around the UK or further afield.

Thank you all for your imput. Not usually a unanimous decision on these sites but it would appear you are all in agreement.
Thanks you.

Have you driven or been in a Defender?

They are nice vehicles, but a big step down in refinement and power from a V8 L322 as well as luxury.

Defender prices are all over the show at the moment, although arguably dropped a bit. Although lots of silly handbag fashion accessory ones priced at crazy money.

Ultimately, the Defender's probably aren't worth the money.... when new they were somewhat cheaper utility vehicles. Even in 2015. But who knows what will happen with prices, I can't see you loosing much money on one, but is this the most important buying factor?

If you have a £40k budget, it gives quite a lot of choice. You've not far off a used Ineos Grenadier, which are much nicer than a traditional 110 in reality. Nobody knows what sort of residuals they'll have though.

You could also get yourself a nice Wrangler 5 door. Very Defender like in many ways, but much better spec, more refined and more power.

There are of course newer Range Rover's or Discovery's you could consider or a host of other 4x4' and SUV's be it a Grand Cherokee, Cayenne, Land Cruiser etc.

Thanks for that insight.
I am 63 nearly so not wanting to see my hard earned disappear in massive depreciation. My L322 was £42,000 when I bought it. It was 11 years ago but its worth £10k at best. It's a fab car and I've done nearly 100,000 in it now and it's on 109k after the weekend but it was an £85,000 car new.
My thinking was a nice Landy but much newer than my Series 3 would hold its value much better and I love Landy's. My Mrs hates my S3 but would be more comfortable with proper suspension and a heated seat!
I'm very torn! May just keep the L322 and keep enjoying it.

That is the dilemma I'm afraid. Expensive luxury vehicles do normally depreciate. My p38 had a list price of £54k or so, way back in 1999. I paid £2300 for it 9 1/2 years ago. My Uncle has an L405 Range Rover TDV8, think he paid £29k a few years ago for it and that was over £120k new. Bentleys often loose even more considering you can get a lovely W12 Continental GT for £10k or under these days.

A Defender is highly likely to retain its value very well, although in reality this only really matters if you plan to sell. If you intend to keep, then it doesn't really matter what its worth.

A Puma Defender can be nice. My brother & I did over 400 miles and about 11 hrs of driving between us on Friday going to Wales and back. But in reality they are probably still closer to a Series III than they are an L322 Range Rover. I'd highly advise going and having a go in one before committing.

But as said in my other post, there are lots and lots of alternatives for that sort of money too. Wranglers tend to hold their value well as do Land Cruisers and G-Wagons. But vehicles that hold their money well will mean you'll end up buying potentially older and out of warranty.

For example, £40k and you could buy a new Ford Ranger with warranty. Not as plus or luxury as your L322, but more modern in terms of tech and delivery mileage.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE Land Rover fan. But at £40k either of the above are just way better vehicles in ever single regard.

I always give the advice for people looking at defenders that it depends what you are used to and what you are comparing it to. I do high milage in my 110, and would think nothing of doing 400miles in a day and regularly do for work. However it is all I have meaningfully driven since I was 18 and my other vehicles are all older than it is so it is the most modern and most comfortable vehicle I own. I am at the point where I try and make any other vehicle I drive as similar to the 110 as possible with the church pew seat position as it is what I am used to and am conformable with.

If you compare the 110 to your series 3 you will be very happy and will be more refined, more powerful, more comfortable, and just generally a much better and more usable vehicle. If you compare it to you range rover you will think it is the same as your series 3! If the wife doesn't like the series, she is unlike to like a defender, especially if she is used to moderns cars and the range rover. Mine certainly dislikes the 110 and the only reason I get away with it is I bought it when I was 18 and have had it 6months longer than her, so my argument is "you knew what you were getting into"!
