right then, finally nearing completion of my 1974 series 3 lightweight and i thought id get the lights all in order. the car had been messed about with lots before i owned it so correct me if im wrong in thinking that i should have 2 relays, one of which that should be the AUX relay and this should be normally open, and an Infra-red relay which should be normally closed. after i had connected everything up i noticed their was no power coming out of my IR relay but 12V was going in, same on my AUX relay. so i connected my VE+ brown wire directly to my Brown and purple Light Switch wire and it dropped the voltage to 2V. i checked the voltage after my new connection are further up the VE+ brown wire and it was just over 2V the whole way though?

At my wits end with the 'modifications' that the previous owner did so any help would be appreciated.

thanks.

If the volts drop that much stop! Could be the lights (main/dip/earth) are wired up wrong and shorting to earth? Of a relay is wired wrong - N/C N/O mixed up?

the lights haven’t even been wired up yet, still just on the main looms. I’ve tested the relays and neither seem to be a N/C

You could have a loose (high resistance) connection, try pulling any crimps and see if the wires more in the terminal.

So here are the relays as I have them wired. Obv has the negative wired in where there is nothing on the second picture. Anything glaringly obv that’s wrong?

Also is the relay needed..... like what does it do? I have very limited knowledge on them. Can I just wire straight through without the relay as I’m not using the IR switch or lights

In your 1st pic of the relays above the wire with yellow tie wrap and the one closest to it have cracked insulation have the cores corroded at that point?
Can you post a pic of infared switch if it is same switch a standard series landrover may be able to modify so it switches the lights.

Are you sure they are both relays? Its hard to tell from teh pics without seeing the numbers, but could the one with the yellow tag be something else?
Do they earth through the case?

Been out today, fairly sure I had the relays wired up wrong- I bypassed the first relay and directly connected the brown live to the brown and purple light switch wire. Disconnected the brown and yellow wire from the relay and all is sorted. To be fair I should probably clean up those relays and give them a good look at before I carry on.

Glad you are making progress. Clean the terminals and the fixings as they may or may not earth through the case.
