A few weeks back I came on here for help as my freelander would not start
Thank to the people who tried to help with the problem
After the garage fitted a new cam sensor , stepper motor and fuel pump at a cost of £550 the car was still not sorted. I got the hump and took it to another garage as the first one didn't seem to have a clue.
Within 5 mins of the car being there they told me it was out of time
Turns out something has gone wrong with the cam belt tensioner and one of the cams has got out of line bending 8 valves. So after 4 weeks at the first garage who told me they had checked the timing it will be up and running again next week.

These places should be shut down.

glad you found a places that seems to know what they are talking about

name and shame...

also, did you tell them to change the cam sensor, stepper motor and fuel pump, or did you ask them to fix the problem ?

tricky ground, but could try for a partial refund of the work that was carried out but not needed.

Im guessing this is a 1.8 petrol?

The cam sensor and stepper motor dont stop it starting. unplug them and try it for yourself

also its not difficult to test for fuel pressure

thats bad

edit: i have actually read your other posts, its fair to assume poor idle could be down to sensors actually

but its blatantly obvious that there was a serious mechanical problems with the engine

believe it or not the k series are normally very reliable other than the HG

i personally think your engine had froze and the problems arose because the water pump driven by the cambelt was siezed

hope that helps
