I am 80 years old and I was given a free lander 2004 sports car it is now making a rattling sound when I turn on the engine and I am praying that it is nothing serious.

Oh dear I don’t know what engine it has I am sorry and is the crank separating expensive?

Fair play to you for coming here for advice, you came to the right place. The guys on this site know more about Freelanders than most garages but it is very difficult to diagnose a rattle without hearing it. Can you describe the sound and where it is coming from?

I put diesel in my tank

Ok. It's what's called a TD4.

They suffer from a problem with the crank damper/ pulley. These can split in half, causing it to rub on the engine casing. When this happens it can make anything from a gentle tapping sound, to a horrible screeching sound. The part can be found for about £90, and should take about 30 to 45 minutes to fit, providing the bolt comes out, which it sometimes doesn't.

I'm not saying that your problem is definitely the crank pulley, but it's very likely.
