Evenin all
Any ideas as to why when the engine is hot say after 15 miles or so the oil pressure warning light flickers on at tickover?
Its a 200tdi and the light will go off if you lift the revs 100rpm or so, im thinking nee hoping its a dodgy oil pressure switch! Any thoughts appreciated and where is the switch is it mounted on the oil filter housing with a single wire?
 
Had this problem once when a modern type synthetic oil was used. I use a good quality (Massey Ferguson) 15w 40 normal oil and have no problems.
I use this oil as i work for Massey :)

our old military n /a diesel 110 does this its just a worn engine. if you change the oil it will go awyay for about a month

dont think its a worn engine as its as strong as ever and its only done 70k from new with good servicing, the oil could be a synthetic as it is as runny as **** water.Think i will change the oil to semi synthetic 15/40 and see wot happens.
Also just been out and found viscous fan is shot so put a screw through it for now till a replacement is purchased, this should help keep the oil that bit cooler.
 
Once again ,,,, use a tractor universal oil, the best of stuff for under £1 a litre.

The pressure switch is a single wire job, and fitted at the filter head.
If you don't want the wee light to come on and worry you, take the wire off and tape it up.

Hi - ive got exactly the same prob with a 200tdi ive put in my old 90 - light flickers at low tickover and comes on full if you slip the clutch to drop revs even lower. ive changed switch and oil - no effect, i droppped the sump and changed mains and big ends - no change! 2 or 3 engine gurus have suggested a failed cam bearing. Ive put a gauge on the engine, at hot tickover ive got about 8psi - this rises to 30 psi at about 1000rpm.
I cant be arsed to take the engine out to strip the cam out and fit new bearings if thats what the prob is! Shes done nearly 1000 miles since i put the engine in and no change in engine noise or oil pressure.
Let me know if you find a quick fix!! cheers steve
 
Check the whole filter head out.
Take the thing off.

Make SURE the pressure limiting valve bullet is seating SHUT, and also that it isn't jammed partly open.

This thing MUST close tight at low revs, and as the speed rises it MUST start to open.

had a Austin Maxi way back about 70-71 (great car too) and its pressure limiting bullet valve got stuck. I didn't know that, but I knew the oil light was flashing at low revs - so I fitted a oil pressure gauge.

Tickover the pressure was about NIL, but when I blipped the throttle the oil gauge needle went twice round the dial. It was geting ober TWO HUNDRED psi!

The gauge never recovered, so I got the limiting valve sorted first, and a new gauge next.

Oil pressure should be between 1.7 - 3.8 bar, sounds like you do have low pressure, idle speed should be 780-800rpm. Could be a blocked oil gallery due to poor maintenance maybe, i'd try a good long flush with some Forte or Wurth engine flush and change the oil again 15w/40 or 10w/40. Are there any noises coming from the cylinder head ?

Wouldnt a blocked gallery give higher oil pressure? My understanding is that at fixed speed, the greater the clearances in the engine the greater the flow hence less pressure? Similarly, the lower the oil viscosity, the lwer the oil pressure?

If the oil return galleries in the head are restricted this can reduce oil pressure, however this tends to be at high rpm. Like you say wear is the most likely cause but if it's not making any obvious noises or leaking oil badly it's very difficult to diag, it could literally be wear anywhere in the oil system causing this. The chap recently had the sump off so i presume the pick up strainer is ok and not restricted.

Try a switch see what happens, try the cheapest things first. I presume it's been serviced regularly?

think i will try the switch first and if no joy the filter head idea sounds feasible for a diy mecomic like me. will keep you all posted

That'll be a trip tae 252 then;) if ye ur gan there, try akin' thum wot they think, but stick tae buyin the switch furst and then tak it fae there;) :D
 
aye iv bought the switch and gettin me parts driver to pick it up the morra, also got a stereo mountin bracket for the dash but it isnar gawin ther its gonna be a stealth stereo system so as thievin bams dinnae git ther hands on it :)

Thot aboot gettin a mountin bracket and stickin it intae the seat box, but it wid just get kicked and bashed aboot. Then ah thocht aboot ahin' the seats sumwhere, but that'd be a pain in the erse. So now thinkin abooy yin o' they things fae MUD uk...

Yeah seen that too and your right it duz look the dogs dangly bits and extra switch room too but not sure.
Got a pair of boxes for the back to mount 6x9s in and they are xcelent see

Bloody hell!!!! Ah ken the defenders ur a bit noisy, but ye'll defuntly need earplugs when ye stick thone in:eek: :eek: :D
 
Hell yes i just disapointed i aint gonna get me 2 12 inch subs in wi me alpine head unit and 4 other speakers!!!! talk bout vibration :)
