Morning,
I'm using the time to sort out the TDI. I've a set of gauges from years ago, and a hole in the dash board, so I'm going to fit the gauges, regardless of the good sense of the task.

The first is the oil temperature gauge.
Is there a handy blank port on a disco TDI I can tap into to get an oil temperature reading?

The second is the boost gauge: on a defender manifold set up, where is the best/easiest place to tap into the system? Ideally without disassembly of too much plumbing.

I'm not after super accuracy, but a relative indication of what the engine is experiencing.

Easiest way for the boost pressure, is to put a t piece in the little 6mm black plastic pipe that runs from the turbo to the top of the injection pump ,iirc there is a blank on the back of the intake manifold (disco version, not sure on def one) that some people tap into to get a true reading.

I think only place to plug in the oil temp sensor, is the oil pressure sensor, you will need a t piece.
Dont ask me thread size/pitch I have no idea, there is if you search a good site where they do loads of different t pieces.
 
Don't know, to be honest, after all, I think that what comes out of the sump is what has just been in the engine.

So that's the better indication of what the engine is experiencing, I think.

But as I say, it's just because I've the gauges, and a hole in the dash.
 
Surely you need to read the oil temperature after it has been through the oil cooler?

200 has an oil stat, not sure on oepening temp, but it may mean no useful temp readings until after the oil stat has opened?
 
It depends. If the gauge is normally cold, but one day reads hot, it might suggest the stat has failed. That's useful.

Or, if the temp starts climbing as I go up a mountain with a trailer behind, I know I'm working the engine beyond the oil cooler thermal dump capacity.

Again useful.

It's just another datum. Utility depends on whether it's used, or changes understanding.
 
Can it be fitted where plug 5 is on last post drawing, its position probably is not that critical just will read a little higher at that point but you would be able to see what normal is and take action if it goes higher.

Thb I have no idea, but there was a really good thread on here a few weeks/months back, with an excellent reply on what all the ports did and how the stat worked, oil flow etc.
I think it was in the 200 section, not sure if search is still dead?

10mm X 1.0 it looks like, but that's a real odd size. I've had a look at NPT threads and it could be 1/8 NPT. I'll order an adapter now.

Definitely 10mm by 1.0. The new sender is the standard 1/8 NPT.
I've bought an adapter.
Not cheap, but cheaper than the cost of making one.

Speaking of making one:
The boost gauge came with a barb, threaded.
So I tapped into the boost splitter, that goes between the fuel pump and the boost gate thingy.

That should do the job.
I'll use an old breather pipe to plumb to the gauge, if its long enough!
 
It's a good 4 inches away, but I'll keep an eye on it. Not keen on the clamps to be honest, they are a bit too bulky, I think.
