hi all i have an oil leak on my discovery 2 td5 auto no surprise there it seems to be coming from the direction above the starter motor too the bottom of the auto box anyone had similar issues if so how did the fix it thanks in advance just wanted to say all bolts have been checked for torque and all at required strengthat a loss

Have you washed the engine and then taken it for a short run to see if you can ascertain from where the oil emanates ?

Yes I had the trucks on ramps washed the gearbox and underneath then I washed the engine went for a short drive nothing showing the checked again at about 150 and it was running passed the starter again

If you are sure it is oil.

Take the engine noise cover off and check down the back of the engine if you can get in there.
Although not that easy on a TD5.
Cheers

doesn't appear to be any oil running from the back of the engine down the box and past the starter just seems to start about an inch above the starter motor the upper part of box and back of engine are dry and oil free

There are 2 primary points to leak oil down at the back end of the cylinder head:
  • The cam cover gasket, particularly from around the little half moon on the back of it.
  • The camshaft machining hole which is opposite the pop-out bung at the front of the engine. It's a rubber plug and according to @neilly a right PITA to change.
I would go for the cam cover gasket first, although it can leak from other areas other than the back end too.

I never said it was a PITA to change ...
Cheers
Easy peasy ..... when you've got the head off. With the head in place, I can't even get my fingers in there!"
The one on the front is easier than a 5 minute job.

Thanks all for advice knowing my luck its going to be the pita job but will check other first and thanks for the talc powder trick too

Is it oil? May be its diesel. My Td5 had leaking fuel pressure regulator, looked like engine oil. Its located just above starter motor on passenger side of head (LHD car).
