hi all, my recently aquired 2a seems to be leaking oil by the handbrake hub. is there a gearbox oil seal situated where the hub joins the box? is it hard to change?

Yes theres a seal, you have a choice rubber or leather!
No its not hard to change
Hardest bit is getting the 4 prop bolts undone that probably havent moved for years.

cheers lynall, whats the best choice rubber? im taking gearbox out to change clutch ts there any other seals worth changing once its off?

Change the crank seal whilst you are there. Also check that your gearbox and transfer box oil arnt mixing, if they are you may as well do that seal as well.

I read some where that a bloke pushed in two oil seal into the gearbox to stop it leaking!! Even with new seal it will usually leak a little. As for the rear crank oil seal, if it is not leaking do not change it. The design of this seal is ***** useless.

you cant fit 2 seals ,no room for 2 ,crank seal is tricky but worth doing if leaking ,just difficult as crank boss is in the way ,sewal is split so you can get it over journal and garter spring has to be fitted and hooked together ,then all held in right place while fitting the two halves of seal housing
