Hi everyone.Recently purchased a TD4 and everything was fine until I noticed a loss in power at about 3000 revs on M1.Got home and found oil leaking out onto driveway! car was smoking quite badly too. However when ticking over I tried to locate where the oil was coming from I could not see any visible signs of oil leakage which was baffling. A friend suggested turbo failure, but when he removed it for examination it seemed fine and he suggested that the intercooler was sucking in oil,so maybe a seal or something had gone? My friend is no expert so I wondered if anyone out there could suggest any problem before I invest any more money. Hope someone can help.Thanks,Andy.

Check the engine breather filter, its located under the engine cover at the back of the cylinder head, do a search on here for more information.

Its slightly fiddly to remove.

It has been covered extensively recently, its a serviceable item and when blocked causes poor performance and when really bad, oil leaks, the oil can come out of the dip stick because the crank case pressure is so strong due to the filter getting blocked.

Dont panic the filter isnt expensive and its a DIY job i just hope you have caught it early before any real damage to the engine has been caused.

i agree wif the zippy. . .but afore that, td4 only . . .check your air intake hoses first , there are two, undo engine cowel on lhs you will see a large rubber hose going into a metal heat plate wif juberly type clips [one on left ,and one on right] you want these clean inside no holes [no matter how small] and no collapsing. . . .reet at the rear end of motor but lhs [lookin in] you will find wot looks like a very small filter wif a small dia clear tube , make sure tube is ok un not collapsed ,if the filter looks dirty change it , if after checking this and all ok . . .then return to the zippy bit. . . .oh un best oh luck :) :) :)

Yes!!:) Thanks to all your advice the problem was sorted with a £17 repkacement breather filter!! Question is the vehicle has 93k on the clock with FULL LR service history, so seeing as this is a common problem that LR are obviously aware of is this part of the service routine???? Surely if it isn't it should be! Is the same problem apparent on all vehicles with this engine, i.e Rover 75 CDT?? Reason I ask is my dad has one so would be a good idea to replace his also. Next problem is that the alternator has packed up because of all the oil that has gone in to it:mad: . Turned out to be an oddball type so have had to send away for it so the Freelander is off the road for another week. Hopefully one day I will get to enjoy it. Anyway as said before, thanks for your help.
