Have replaced ERG also fitted BMW crankcase filter, new silicone hoses & have spent many dollars on getting mechanics trying to find fault with the dreaded 2000 rev miss & smoke syndrome [reported in previous bloggs ] to find out that diagnostics test point to a fuel problem also could be a faulty injector?.
So have ordered a new fuel pump [rear] from the UK & will be delivered next week & will see if this rectifies the problem. Will pass on results, also now on the way to the forum! I have noticed that there is oil in the turbo intake hoses & on start up blue smoke & running rough for a few seconds then clears, occasionally repeats scenario during day. Vehicle runs well, fast pick up lots of grunt tows a 17ft van at 100 kph returning 12 ltrs per 100 k, normally around 8/8.5 so if any body can suggest a cause it will be appreciated. LenV

Blue smoke at start up shows oil is getting into the intake. If it's only after the initial start, after a period of non running. Then the most likely cause is a failing valve oil seal.

Oil misting in the boost hoses is pretty normal for a turbo charged diesel. If oil starts running through the hoses, then the turbo is failing and MUST be replaced.

I've not found my 2K misfire and now just ignore that it happens.

Thanks Nodge for your advise, mechanic suggested that I use sport mode down a range near me to use the engine
as a brake [about 4 k] then pull over & rev the engine hard, if valve seals are bad will evidently blow a lot of blue smoke,
this I have tried twice but as well as no smoke revs like a new car, so will wait for the new pump & try it.

Have fitted new pump with no noticeable results, engine still misses on start up with blue smoke then settles down in a minute or so, little or no oil use
or loss of power, runs like new when warm/hot, did 300 k run on Sunday to Noosa & went like a dream. So unless something drastic happens will ignore
the start up & drive it till it finally croaks.

It'll be the valve guide oil seals. Perfectly acceptable to leave it as it is, until it smokes all the time. ;)

Thanks for the advise, would cost more to replace than what I would get for the car.

If it's only a puff of blue at start up, then don't worry. It's not going to cause any problems to leave it as it is. It'll be happy to puff a bit of blue for the rest of the vehicles life. The only time you need to me more concerned, is when it blows blue smoke all the time. ;)

the idea of leaving the valve stem oil seals unless a constant smoke is a great idea, this will allow a little oil to help things. The only issue if its getting any blow back as it clogs the guide and effects running slightly.
