Advice please on my 2013 FL td4 2,2 7100,000. It has been going into limp mode after varying miles and I thought it was down to oil in the intack system affecting the egr and intercooler system. Have removed the egr & cooler ( what a fiddle of a job) and the intercooler. EGR looks good with little carbon.
I don't think it is the turbo as it turns freely and almost no play andonly trace of oil in the pressure pipe. There is some delay in boost and sometimes engine hunts when on tick over. Exhaust is very clean and no appreciable engine oil usage.
I am now suspecting the oil is tfrom he crankcase breather system but on the later engines I have been informed it is in the rocker cover and not servicable. The pipe i think it is had oil run out when taken off. Is it likely to be this and can it be servised?
I am planning to replace the egr as not that expensive whilst off .Aslo going to flush the intercooler but does not look clogged for the milage. Could the oil cause limp mode or will it be a sensor ? Posted detailed info to help diagnosis Many thanks
 
Why have you done all this without first reading the diagnostic codes. The car will then tell you why it is going into limp mode. It might very well be something completely different.

Oil in the intake system shouldn't be troubling the EGR. If it is going through the intake it will be sucked into the engine and burnt with the 'other' fuel. It will then be kicked out the engine as exhaust - which then may/will make its way to the EGR as combine exhaust emissions.
 
Someone did read the codes for me and said it was either the EGR or MAP sensor issue. With signs of oil around EGR pipe to the inlet manifold (part clogged with gung) and intercooler weeping by the inlet I followed that advice. I was partly concerned the turbo was going and could trash the engine if it started running on sump oil. Now I have it apart, possibly wrongly, and such a rave to put back I want to resolve the oil issue if I can . That cannot be correct as the engine seems otherwise in good order. It seems Starts and runs well except in limp mode and hardly any oil consumption despite the leaks. I may have done far more than needed but advice on the oil in nthe system would be much appreciated please.
 
It's a turbo diesel, so there will always be oil in the inlet tract. It's completely normal and nothing to worry about, as long as it's just a film of oil covering the intake walls.

If oil is literally running through the pipes, then there's an issue, but you'll notice the sump level dropping if that were the case.

Reading the codes is the first place to look. If it's coming up with a MAP / MAF fault, then it's possible that the MAP sensor port is clogged with carbon goop. This will give conflicting signals to the EDC and so it flags a fault. It's very unlikely to be anything to do with the EGR system, especially if a code doesn't point to it.

It's not uncommon for the throttle butterfly to stick, but again that gives a code suggesting that there's an issue with it.
 
Many thanks, I will reaseble in the next few daysand report back on success of failure. However, i am still concerned about the oil as the car has been good and clean under the bonnet and would like to keep it so. I can accept that there can be a build up of oil over time and a small amount can go a long way but cannot help thinking something is wrong to make it visible. Has anyone had an issue with the crank case breather on the post 2010 engines with a different system. If so what was the solution other than replacing the rocker cover/ Thanks
 
The oil that @Nodge68 refers to would only be on the 'inside' of the induction system (hoses etc) - it shouldn't escape out over the engine.

I know nothing on the FL2 engines so can't comment on what may cause that.
