Hi my freelander TD4 started smoking badly from the exahaust after seeking advise i changed the oil breather filter this had little effect. i then removed the intercooler and found loads of oil in there so flushed with paraffin and reattached to the right hand hose. I started the engine and all of a sudden the revs shot right up, removed the keys with no effect so had to bend the intercooler hose over to stop air getting in and kill the engine. obviously its running on its own oil the question is why and whats broken?
I would be gatefull For any help
Thanks

Ttter. . . .sounds like yer got a small hole in yer turbo rubber bits. . . lhs er engine lookin in is one thick rubber goin into a alloy heat tube ,nuffer rubber the other side ,check them all for nicks or collapsing and replace. . . . . .it causes a orrible black oil to build up that get sucked int the egr and burnt [hence the black smoke] mixin wiff paraffin produces a highly good fuel . . .titter, like ethanol fer racing motors, try it on road ,should do about 180mph , joking aside your gonna have ta burn it orft. . .:) :) :)

Hi Ming,
The intercooler pipes are all new and in good nick, after I cleaned out the intercooler i made suer it was dry before refitting it, topped up the oil to the correct level then took it out for a short run, about half a mile with a smoke screen behind me!! When I checked the oil again it was off the dipstick so its all going out the backend question is from where? any ideas?
Cheers
Tom

OK. . .if yer rubbers are good , have you checked the engine de- compresion filter lately should be renewed bout every 35,000 miles ,but normaly peeps dunt bother, this can force oil in the engine to come outer the dip stick un all other strange places. . . .jist er thought :) :) :)

Major problem. You say that you have changed the 'Depression limiting valve oil separator' often described as 'cam filter' 'PCV filter' 'engine breather' etc etc. My view is that you need to change (urgently) the 'Depression limiting valve' as it has failed and is allowing the turbo to suck engine oil from the sump. Lots of these available on the net etc but if you're struggling I'll send you one of my spares from the fleet spares stock from Southern France for the shipping costs plus the cost of a decent bottle of red vin. Dann....

Thanks for the offer Dann but I think i have changed that, is it just behind the injectors held down with 4 allen screws with a little blue filter in it?
How much will a new turbo be andwheres the best place to get one?
Cheers

Take off the turbo pipe to the engine and see if the pipe and turbo are full of oil, the turbo will have play in the bearings but if the blades are touching the casing then they will be damaged at the edges, if it's not the valve the other chap noted then the seal in the turbo has gone, and you risk a runaway engine, like you already had but out of control until it blows. Run it with the pipe off and see if it's ****ing oil out the turbo.

Once you get it fixed it will take ages to get it out the exhaust and if it has a cat then it could be fooked.

I don't mean drive it.

Right, I'm 99% certain that it's the turbo but has anybody got any advise on how to remove and replace? In the haynes manual they say to remove the intermiediate reduction drive. Is this really needed?
Thanks
