Does anyone of any reason why the filter cannot be changed on a 97 DSE without draining the rest of the oil?

Reason for asking, before anyone says just change the oil, is that I did the dickhead thing and didnt have my socket set for the top cap after I'd drained the oil. And of course I only had the car on the drive, without any oil in it, to go collect said socket set. THerefore I topped and changed the oil up without changing the filter in the hope i can do it at a later date...

Checking the workshop manual it does state I should drain the oil first but was wondering what the reason is behind this. Otherwise that was a waste of 9 litres of oil!

Thanks

So that the local garage cant just change the filter and charge you £100 for oil??

The reason is simple when you remove the filter the dirty oil within it drains into the sump and so drains out. Putting new oil in it without changing the filter is a bit tits about.

logic would suggest that the crap in the oil is also in the filter and any small particles that can pass through are still there, get a strap around the filter housing and open it. its very easy. change the filter as often as possible. there cheap as chips and you will give your engine the best possible chance to live as long as possible.
