Hi all,

The TD5 woes are coming thicker and faster these days…

After installing a replacement oil cooler housing (used), I’ve gone through THREE oil filter housings, which are all cracking in the exact same place - just to the left of where the RH bolt fastens to the cooler. Each time It has cracked within 30 mins of driving, and I’ve lost half my oil before I’ve known anything.

First time I just assumed I’d over torqued it, second time I went easy and it still cracked, third time I used a suitably sized torque wrench set to 25Nm, and then backed it off slightly, and that one cracked too!

Only things I can think of is that the new (used) oil cooler housing is warped somehow, but I’ve never heard of that happening…

Any ideas?

Cheers!

Easy enough to check I'da thought with summat flat either a straight edge or bits of glass, Just saying cos I have a 10p engineand cannot be sure.

Never heard of them cracking when driving, I’ve broken a few getting seized oil filters off though where people have over tightened them.

Where are you getting the replacement filter housings from?

First replacement was from my doner vehicle, second off eBay. The oil cooler was also off my doner, which has been sat for a couple of years now…

In that case I'd take the oil cooler housing off again and check it for flatness as well as anything else it has attached to it and that it is attached to.

So it turned out the oil cooler housing was the culprit - not sure how but it must have been ever so slightly warped. Switched it over and no more problems.
