Hi all,
Apologies if this a daft question- i know next to nothing about turbos. When driving to my parents house in Staffs Moorlands from Herts last night my Turbo started intermittently making a horrible noise- not all the time, but every 20/30miles or so there would be a couple of seconds of evil sounding buzzing- like a cross between grinding and air escaping that 'squirrels around'. I think at the same time the vehicle felt a little low on power (but i backed off when the noise happened so i'm not too certain). At the same time at this a whistle developed that has become fairly pronounced. At one stage in the journey the buzzing noise started happening constantly- so i pulled over to confirm that it was the turbo. I undid the bottom turbo pipe (the one under the pipe from the air-box) and the noise stopped. At the same time the pip p*ssed oil all over the engine bay- not constant but a heavy splattering. Is this normal? I stuck the pipe back on and the buzzing noise went away almost completely- although the whistle was still very loud.
In terms of the noise- i would have thought that if it was the bearings it would have been making the noise all of the time?
Could it be to do with the wastegate? If it was stuck open a little way it would be causing a whistle (also, it has been slightly low on power since the whistling started). If the wastegate was stuck open more it would, i reckon it would make a buzzing/squirreling sound.
So two questions- what do you geniuses think it is?
Can i drive it until tuesday when it goes for it's mot (as i'm buggered if not).
Vehicle is a 200tdi 110 with 200k that's just had an oil change and new turbo pipes.
Cheers in advance!
