I am looking to use the van off road in the winter, mainly around and about on a farm. It is therefore likely to be more muddy than anything else.

I have a couple of friends who have Disco's and a few farmers with Defenders and the opinions are divided.

Cooper STTs are rated pretty highly by the Disco drivers and one of the Defender (110) drivers however the others think they are noisy and prefer BF G's.

I currently only have the 18" wheels rather than a choice, so I either have to find a set of smaller rims to go on, find a good compromise tyre not too different to the Scorpions in terms of size etc, or try and source a set of STTs in in something like 265/60/18s.

These are 1.5 inches bugger than the standard diameter. Will this cause rubbing issues, and has anyone suffered adverse component wear (Transmission etc) due to going oversize.
 
You'll find most breakers have got 16" wheels, especially if you're not too concerned what they look like - farm, winter, mud - that would give you a greater choice of tyre without any issues. You could try RangeRoverBreakers, he's a member here and isn't too far from you.
 
General Grabbers.

The AT2s have been discontinued (but you might still find some) and their replacements don't look very off roady but are apparently just as good.

You should have no trouble finding them in 18inch and they're very well behaved on the road too. They're fairly similar to the Scorpions although better off road.

Being ATs they're not as good in mud as a dedicated mud tyre, but they're pretty good. I've not got stuck yet.

Best of all, it seems to be one of the few tyres the P38 actually likes on an 18 inch rim.
 
Tyre choice with a P38 seems to be such a lottery - I must replace mine in next few weeks but i'm not really nailing it to one choice so far. I won't be buying Scorpions again or anything towards £200 a tyre, more like £120-140 probably.

General Grabbers do seem to be well liked by a lot, then there is Wranglers but also Vredestein, Coopers, Kumho's get good reviews. Like most people i want the best all season tyre which will perform well in any of Britain's weather but could cope with mild off roading should i choose to go anywhere.

Is there any point trying to look beyond the Generals for something better?
 
i once heared of a guy fitting mini dumper truck tyers on 16" rims he braged about been able to drive over freshly plowed fields in the ****ing rain
worth a thought if its mainly in the mud
 
i had hankook rt03 mud tires on me rangie, ok on road ok off, no better no worse.Had deestone extra tractions and michelin xzls on me fender and series.the deestonees were like paddles through mud.But sounded like india 99 was following me on road.

There was a feature in July's LRO about a p38 with 16" dumper truck tyres, it looked unstoppable!!

Around here Baja tyre's seem to be rather popular ;)

LRO mentioned a P38? Blimey, they must be running out of material on Defenders and Discos.

I stopped buying it because of their constant total lack of RR articles.
