Hi folks, I'm a new boy. This site looks very good indeed on first viewing -well done the admin team.

Hope you might be able to help me please.

I've a '95 Disco 1 V8, 7-seater, with just 25,000 miles on the clock. Second owner, had it for 18 months, have every MOT, properly serviced and in great condition (don't mention the peeling dashboard which I plan to sort). Apart from needing a rear step (why are they so expensive?), and a fix on the cruise control which lights up but doesn't work (pump?) I have only one complaint. After a journey there is this sort of burning smell towards the back of the vehicle. It smells sort of like a new exhaust does when it's just ben fiitted and is burning off. The exhaust is stainless steel but far from recent. I have all sorts of daft theories running 'round my head (mostly transmission related) but no real idea.

I'd welcome any thoughts!

check the path of the exhaust, most of the time a none genuine exhaust doesnt follow the correct path, so it may be closer to something than it should be.

Try having a closer look underneath and have a sniff to try and locate the area that it is coming from, ignore the strange looks from the neighbours.
Check that you dont have a poly bag or road debris melted to the exhaust, nothing like a bit of road kill cooked on the hot metal work.

If it's decent road kill then it will be cooked like a hog roast, could be tasty!

Thanks all.

Think it's leaking oil from half shaft end seal onto inner wheel rim, off side rear. Transmission oil smell immediately recognised by aged 90-driving father in law. Felt stupid.
