I will start by stating what my car is:-
1997 Discovery 1 300tdi Auto.
I have had my disco for about 2 months. I had it serviced when I first got it by a local garage. The synopsis was that it was NOT BAD but the injection pump sounded a little noisy!
about 1000 miles ago every now and then I would have difficulty starting the car. It would turn over and sort of start, but CHUG, with no acceleration! at the same time smoke for ENGLAND! I would need to turn it off, then turn the key again and would start fine. No smoke and drives like a bomb! However the problem is starting to get more regular to the point it took over half an hour to get it started yesterday. But again when it did eventually start it went fine, no smoke and full power.
Any thoughts out there? is it my pump knackered? is there a way of diagnosing the problem? As an extra the cruise control has never worked since I had the car. Could this be part of it? ie. a vaccuum problem!
Regards
Ian

if your problem is from cold you must first check your cold start system, it sounds like the glow plugs need some attention. good luck. Beni

ive been having exactly the same problem with my van in the end i had to replace fuel pump, injectors and glowplugs although i ran up and down to london every week for 4 months before i put it into the garage ended up costing close on a grand you could try an engine flush or running some redex through it as thats what i diid inthe short term and it did make a differance up to a point but had to get work done to pass mot

I assume that when you had it serviced they changed the fuel filter but they may not have cleaned the sedimenter which is also a filter at the rear of the car just in front of the fuel tank. Its worth a look at because it often gets overlooked. good luck. Beni

Its got beyond the joke now so booked it into a diesel specialist to run diagnostics! Also asked my Landrover main dealer to have a quick look. He saw that there wa debris inside the timing belt cover and posibly lost some teeth! This would explain some thingss too. Mind you the belt was an expense I was expecting as I was going to do it anyway. Fingers crossed that will solve the problem. Looking at Haynes it does state that the bracket for the injection pumps re 1999 wore the belts out rapidly and also knocked out the pump, this could cause starting problems? Has anyone out there got a new bracket fixing for the pump to realine it?
