I have a ‘07 4.2 sc with the 6-speed gearbox. It has done 90k miles.

The gearchange is rough when accelerating from 60mph on a motorway. (I think when it goes from 6th to 5th, or 4th).
It is also a bit slow to change during the first 5 mins of driving.

I’ve been advised to change the gearbox oil, which I will do.

Before I commit the £3-400 to get that done, is there any way of knowing whether that will fix the problem, or if the problem is deeper?
I don’t want to waste time/money changing the fluid if the gearbox actually needs more major work.

Hi Tom, can you not do the oil and filter change yourself? I'm sure there's a how to in the technical archive,top left of the range rover home page.

Changing the oil and filter is the first step, the oil pan can also be examined for debris. As with anything to do with cars, you pay to find out unless as Al' says try it yourself.
Don't forget te first five minutes of driving everything is cold and needs to warm up. Including the oils in both the engine and gbox.
 
Many thanks for all the great replies. I went ahead with the oil change today, done by Ian Boldsworth (https://www.facebook.com/UpdatesByBodsy) as I don't trust myself.

Also changed transfer box and diff oils at the same time.

I have been out for a short drive and it is MUCH smoother so far. Apparently there was a small amount of metallic material in the oil but nothing too excessive.
 
If it looks like dark grey a paste that is found in the sump that is normal as long as there isn't too much as you say.
See, you pay to find out but this time it was a plus. Enjoy the beast:)
