Can anyone help me ?? My 1987 defender 90 won't start .when you turn the key it sounds like it's trying but not getting there. Put new battery in . Then new starter motor . I'm now waiting for ignition switch to arrive . Thing is I have a sneaky disposes ion that's not the problem ..

Need more info
Does the starter motor actually turn?
If so is it slow/fast?
Have to removed and checked all the earth lead connections?
What engine as 1987 I think to early for 200.
You can supply your own power to the starter solenoid trigger wire this will bypass the ign switch and tell you straight away whats going on.

It's a 200tdi land rover engine was converted before I bought it .When the key is turned sometimes there is no clicking as if it's totally dead then try again and it's as if there is not enough power to the starter you can bump start and runs ok

Try putting a jump lead from battery negative to engine block.

If that solves it its bad earths

Sounds like the starter lead is loose ...

Maybe enough to short on the starter body now and again ...

Back on the road again ;) going fishing for a couple of days to celebrate .thanks all for help and advice .. My own spazzy fault was a duff earth didn't check properly first time .. Great learning curve though ..

Its well worth adding an extra earth or two as originals arent great.
Engine to chassis and engine to battery direct.
