I was thinking tonight while changing a headlight bulb that, my Suzuki Vitara has NEVER given me ANY problems of any kind. But my Discovery has had a few, from brake disc snapping, gearbox exploded on the motorway, rear wiper motor packed in, intermittent fault with rear door locking, drivers door window regulator knackered and so on and so on..
I still love the Discovery more than any other car I've ever had! :D
Anyone else had so many problems but still can't help but love the car to bits? There is something about owning a Land Rover, it's not like I own the road, but I feel that I'm a damn sight more proud to be on it in my Discovery. I'm going to compile a list of the history of the car it makes interesting and amusing reading. :p

But just got a l reg 200tdi discovery and ive got the smile back its a land rover thing u love them or hate them:)

Definately, the first time driving one I was like "OMG! It's like a tank, I can't see the end of the bonnet!!" But once you're used to them, their the best thing you can drive, never felt safer than in a Land Rover.

After 20 trouble (Nearly) free years driving VW/Audis I bought my first Disco last October 2006 thanks to this forum.I now seem to spend more time with the old girl (on top & under) than with her in doors.The gearbox has just blown up but what the hell "everthing goes in Love and war"
Everything that I did'nt want but you do get a certain amount of satisfaction keeping the old girl running!

Tis very true, they give you a great smile every time you start the big engine up and the car rocks under the torque of it.
thinking of passing mine on as it is now a welders paradise, boot pan on the way out and front wheel arches are pock marked with rust holes and crunches when you push on them.
Other then that the car has not faultered once, starts every time.
 
Well mine was bought by me dad when it was nearly new, was in the Avalon Blue colour and fairly plain with cloth seats in the nice grey colour (though I wished it was the seats with half leather and the Land Rover logo in the middle, but I wasn't so fortunate..) It was a fairly reliable beast till it's Gearbox split on the motorway due to some design fault with a gear not drilled for oil passage, it siezed and locked up solid and the car was REALLY scary. Got it sorted by Farnell Land Rover and it ticked on, few niggles here and there and one day some drug dealer tried it on with the car, big mistake, hit him, pulled back, and rammed him again, only damage to the Discovery was a slightly pushed back bumper, crease to a wing and a headlight popped out. Damage to their Honda Civic? Where do you start! Hitting the passenger side square on, smashed both passenger side windows as it bent the car in half, pushed both tyres on the drivers side off the rims, forced it's gearbox out and onto the floor, basically it forced the car to be half as narrow! Police said is as many careful words we did a damn good job. :D
After that we were dead chuffed with the car as you can imagine, but my dad had enough of driving so I was given the car.
I had the car resprayed black, was thinking of going for Java Black but wasn't deep enough so I had a custom black made, very VERY dark black. I also hated having cloth seats so I had a professional retrim them in black leather with red piping, he usually does Ferrari's so was shocked when a 7 seat Discovery turned up. :p
I also had him replace the interior carpet with a black one to go with it all.
After the ramming incident I figured I'd go down the route of bull bars so I had some bought from Land Rover supermarket in liverpool for like £145. Marvellous, also some 100w Wipac lamps.
I had some tweaks done to it including a fuel pump modification but it still has the EGR at the moment, waiting for the blanking plate to arrive.
Got loads of pictures of the car before, as it's been slowly done up and as it's finished, hell it's parked in my back yard, I take pictures of it all the time, it's my baby! :cool:

I don't use my Discovery for off roading, I have a modified Vitara that I play about in, which I'll also upload pictures of.. :p
I'm about to upload pics of the Discovery in a few minutes, most of the costs have been in upgrades, I've spent on paint, carpet, seats, suspension, tuning, anything that was not good looking when I had it stripped down was replaced with new parts, so new sedimenter, fuel lines, fuel pump, sender from the tank which was also, a new tank.. hehe, new towbar, alpine windows, new seals, sidesteps, HID lights, new headlights actually, special LED sidelights that can also strobe, sound system, I got some bullbars and wipacs and foglights fitted but I've removed the bullbars and wipacs at the moment as I took them off to make it easier to change the headlights and haven't put them back on yet, but give us a bit and you'll see and make up your own mind. No matter what anyone else thinks, I love the car anyway :D
 
Okay, bear with me this is slow progress uploading then plopping them on here. In the picture below you will see firstly, the car needs a vacuum. Secondly the dashboard is REALLY flat, wasn't always like that but so glad I got that sorted as I was fed up with it looking like soggy cardboard.
It's difficult for photographing but the seats are made with jet black shetland leather, as used in higher spec Renaults, but thicker. The piping is actually thinner Italian leather in the most vibrant red there is, just difficult to show this in photos. The carpet which is black (was origionally grey) isn't the synthetic fibre crap Land Rover issue, it's made with wool. Nearly forgot, also had the door cards done with the same black leather, did try them with piping around them too but didn't like the look of too much red, I'm more of a moody goth.

As you can see, I've also got the rear seats done, did contemplate having the seatbelts changed for black ones but couldn't be bothered. The keen of eye will notice there is no door card on the luggage compartment door, this is because I removed it to fit additional speakers, work in progress.

As you can see the headrests of the front seats are different, basically hard cell foam filled the gap and leather put around it to make it slightly cushioned and stop it looking as plasticy at the top, but still wanted to retain the handles as they look cool. :cool:

This is the middle section of seats, obviously (to Discovery owners). I had extra soundproofing layed down here under the seats and over the rear arches as I didn't like the howling I got at motorway speeds, seemed to have reduced it a fair bit. Was unsure wheteher or not to have it piped to make the middle seat look seperate but decided against it as wanted it to look different, but still factory built (not over the top like some Halfords special, which at what it costs, it certainly isn't).

You can tell I had a new towbar fitted at some point, but ran out of money and used the old steps haha. Was going to replace them, but they only get used for me to hop up when cleaning the roof anyways. Speaking of cleaning, sorry the car is so filthy, I've not had time to bother this week.

This is a view of one of the rear seats, the wire you see is from the subwoofer I had to remove, I have 2 15" Kicker competition subwoofers pumping out in the region of 3000w of bass alone, then another 2000w in component speakers. Whenever I take my family about or my cousins to the park they seem to have to sit on these little seats, novelty of waving at other cars behind them I think. :rolleyes:

This is one of the subwoofers, as you can see it's too bloody big, It's like having a 15" alloy wheel, in a big wooden box, both subs literally fill the boot when in so have to be removed if I'm travelling with alot of passengers. Make a nice noise though, I've had soundfiles on the stereo of a 3.9 V8i once when driving past some people looked VERY confused to hear a V8 racing when a diesel chugs past. Also drowned out many a chavs music in their Nova's with stuff like Black Sabbath. :cool:

The outside, when it's clean the paintwork looks BRAND NEW, it should do, used over 9 litres apparently, lot of acid etch, primer, gel coat, flexible undercoat on the underside of the vehicle and lots and lots of that black paint then a fair few coats of gloss laquer.

The front of the beast, as I mentioned I've not put the bullbars and Wipac driving lamps back on yet, soon as I do I'll upload more pictures. I also have approx 500 pictures at various stages of the rebuild, from how it was (standard, Avalon Blue) and as it was dismantled, bits checked, removed, replaced, strengthened, lightened, changed, upgraded, rebuilt, painted and modified. Availiable on request. *bows*

A view of the side, as I said before I've not had much time to clean it this weekend but probably will do later on. When cleaned and polished it looks better than my mate's Discovery 3 and that's only 6 months old! I have done nearly everything I wanted to with this car, just need to finish a few small things and fit a full size roof rack and then it's done. Can't wait to build my next one:
Land Rover Discovery 5.2 V8i 3 door manual. Will be an absolute beast with wide, box arches like a Lancia Delta and muchos performance modifications.

Well I hope you all like my car, please don't be too harsh, it's my first attempt at a modified Land Rover. I know it may not be to everyone's taste but it looks and rides like a new one should and it's kept me happy. I'm only 22 after all..

just think how much of a deposit ya could have put down on a house with what youve spent.

Aye, could have put a major deposit down, but would rather have a few flash cars and motorbikes than a big house anyday. Especially seen as I can stay at my parents rent free.
