I'm getting between 17/19 mpg and it takes ages to get to temp but only blows warmish air. Is this due to the cold weather or would I have a faulty thermostat or are TD5 auto's similar in cold weather thanks

Change stat, use flushing agent in the coolant and backflush the system inc the heater matrix, refill with good quality antifreeze and see what happens, you could try a rad muff to help restrict the air flowing through the rad but usually not a problem unless the stat is stuck open.

17/19mpg, that much hey? Auto or manual?

It's sure to be stat related. It will be stuck open allowing full circulation of coolant through the rad. The engine will never get to operating temperature and thus use more fuel. You won't get much heat out of the heaters.

Where about is the stat located ive downloaded rave but it wont run on my chromebook

Thermostat 1.8/Td5/V8 Land Rover Freelander1,Discovery2, see listing (PEL500110) | eBay

It is inline with the rad hoses not mounted on the block or anything like that.

Have you got RAVE downloaded to your goggle drive or to separate host/server/plug in hard drive?

9/10 I just type in what I'm looking for and ask for it in images and you'll normally get diagrams come up too.

I strongly recommend to not do such thing with a Td5 whatsoever

Why?

On a standard untuned engine with a radiator in good order and running a viscous fan it will not hurt it in the slightest, there are plenty of places for the fan to draw air in and by fitting a rad muff you are only reducing the forcing of air through the rad from driving.

I would recommend that you fully understand their purpose, fitting and use before dismissing them as a never to be touched piece of kit.

i know exactly what i'm speaking about based on live mesurements of IAT at -20*C here(not in a mild weather like in the UK) with and without muff cos i believed a post like yours long time ago and i wasted money on one then i realised that the engine was more sluggish with it and i investigated why... guess what the air flow through the intercooler is also restricted by a muff and that's clearely visible on IAT readings and the higher the IAT is the worst the engine is running also the EGT was slightly higher, why do you think that bigger intercoolers are recommended?, ... IMO those muffs were not invented for turbocharged engines which have the intercooler in front together with the radiator and those who sell them dont care about nobody's engine... so IMO you better consider that too before recommending muffs to be used on Td5s in UK without knowing how the engine management reacts to it... maybe just for wading

I know exactly what you're saying, yes we have nice mild winters here, maybe a dip below zero from time to time but that's about it.

For the month or so of crappy cold we get I think the marginal trade off in high powered performance could be omitted? I'd still fit one, probably remove the viscous fan altogether too, just as many hundreds of people have done over the years, I would be interested to see some data on the compressor side temps and EGTs of vehicles running without the viscous fan, and a side by side comparison against a rad muff too if you want to go all out on point proving :p:D

That's entirely your choice, you can torture your engine any way you want... before the EGT you should fit a coolant temp gauge cos you can drive it much at 115*C with a muff and without fan without even knowing it cos the dash gauge will go up from the middle only at 120... maybe that's why there are so many cracked heads around there, IMO if many hundreds of people are doing something without knowing what they are doing doesnt mean it's OK .... if you are not a smoker you should start smoking cos many millions are doing it and some of them lived longer than non-smokers:cool:
