Ok just an idea that could progress. Looking at some possible lanes and fords to do in North east Somerset. Starting from Wells area heading towards Bath and across to Chew lake. Wouldn't be till mid April. Any interest or Ideas would be good.

Somerset are bastards for "boats" but the Lorna Doone valley has a small ford and nice country around there- the old Porlock toll road is magical

Yes I know they are a rare find here.
Looking on fairly recent maps there are some around Midsomer Norton, Bath and just south of Keynsham. I'll admit I've not tried them yet but with some investigation it's got to be worth a try.
Not tried Porlock toll road yet.

ya need a trip to dorsetshire then plenty there , mind your need 6 toes , and 6 fingers to fit in with the rednecks :D:D

There are plenty of short fairly unchallanging lanes aroud keynsham, however if you are fussy about your paint work i wouldnt recomend many of them! Enough to keep you amused for an afternoon though.

Ok the story thus far.
Bath and north east Somerset council was the most promising who when phoned said that if it's on an O/S map as a byway than thats good enough for them but that Ring Spit lane near Woollard has been reclassified to restricted due to miss use.
Somerset council who I went and visited gave me six print off's each containing a section of map with a highlighted byway. Yes six. But they were beaten by North Somerset who told me that yes we have one byway but you can't get a Land Rover down it, just wide enough for a motorbike. Admitedly the man did say he was sorry he wasn't in that department when the law was passed otherwise there would have been more.
Any way given that I have now spent the day planing a route that starts at Cheddar heads toward Bath and then back toward Well's.
The date can be flexible could be looking as early as the 10th of march now.
Any interest stick your name down.

Ok couple pics of day. One or two of the lane's wern't worth driving but most of them were pretty good. Wookey ford was about a foot shallower than my last visit but is always worth a drive. The first lane after Wookey was nice and muddy. Mmajor took some photo's and video which should be on youtube soon.
Anyhow only three photo's from me.

Wookey ford.

And one of Mmajor on the best climb of the day.

Picture's I took don't really do it justice and I didn't take many. Most are the same.
Not many lane's in this area but the one's there are are not to be sniffed at. Couldn't make a full day of it though. To many have been closed just recently.
Never mind next trip Salisbury

Hey D J XAN, I live in Shepton Mallet and am looking for a good route for my first venture down green lanes. I have a little bit of experience of off roading but will feel like I am dipping my toe in the water for the first time as I have never owned a landy before. Do you think that your route would be a good one to start with and if so could you let me have the details and I am give it a go on Sunday. Cheers

I have to admit as a 'noob' I was thinking about venturing out with just one vehicle. Hubby and dogs with me so not technically alone!!!

However, I have since had a little play in the Wookey Ford - will drive that differently next time, and have gone up a lane locally that was marked as a BOAT and appeared to be a through route only to find that it petered out and I ended up having to reverse between trees and a wall with only a few inches either side. Think I will leave the greenlaning until I have a chum or two to go with.

Would be interested to know where you went though as I will recky them on foot as the dogs will appreciate that far more.

PM sent with details.
Wookey is a pretty good ford and the lane near by if I remember correctly is ok to drive but a bit boggy.
I'm in the process of sorting out another route for Torbay but it won't be untill after the summer as I have to much happening this year.
It will be posted on here in due time.
As most people say don't go on your own but if you do which you won't be the first. Always check the route your driving first. But that's common sense.
Have fun

Hey thanks for this, lesson learnt, not going to play on my own, will wait till I have a buddy or two to show me the ropes. looking forward to the Chippy run.

There's a BOAT in Chew Magna - Two Rivers Way. It is extremely tight but you can get a Landy through, albeit minus a bit of pain!
Would be interested in coming out with you guys. Could you let me know when you next head out? Also, co-ordinates of the Wookey Ford would be great.
Cheers,
