Hi All,

Hope everyone is well, including the cars......

Well I haven't been here for a while, good really....... But now the noise coming from under the car is getting worse and need it to drive to the S France in a couple of months.......

basically changed the clutch and gearbox last October. I changed the gear box as I thought it was whining but not sure it was. the whining has gotten steadily worse and taking the car to the UK last week and doing some motor way miles the noise was noticeable.

It sound like an underground train pulling away. It is consistent in all gears, less noise when pulling away hard and most noise when just cruising along. I have checked all the oils, diffs, gearbox and transfer box. On a level surface out of gear tried wobbling the ends of the prop shafts but couldn't feel any movement. There was rotational movement in one end but have forget which but it was a diff end of the prop shaft.

How do I go about trying to isolate the noise further? Any suggestions welcome, perhaps even dropping a match under the bonnet!!!! Not really I do like the old girl, she is a 95 vintage, manual diesel with 153K miles and the 30K she has done with me has been with a powerbox fitted (or whatever it is called).....

Thanks in advance and hope that makes snese and have used the right terms....

Just the sound, I think, but will pay more attention tomorrow. She doesn't seem quite as smooth (obviously relative statement for a diesel) as she did before I did all the work. Also noticed when stopped the other day what felt like the transmission 'catching' whilst I had my foot on the clutch. If any of that helps.

Thanks.

Not the tyres is it?

DMF is a bit of a long job and the parts alone are about £500 without the replacement clutch kit. If it was DMF I think they'd be some rattle or more noise rather than a whine but clutch catching doesn't sound good. Was it a Valeo clutch? A cheapo one will die with a powerbox fitted.

One of the diffs?

I had a noisy rear one which felt fine until all 3 shafts were disconnected and then you could feel it was notchy when turning by hand. No other signs of a problem. That rear diff sounded a bit like your noise symptoms.

On mine, front diff, gearbox and transfer box all gave cause for suspicion and got replaced. I also checked VCU and tried swapping some different wheels & tyres. In the end, most of the noise was from the rear diff which looked fine - I got there last so it was an expensive trip!

I have the same from my front diff.

Whiney noise like a tube train. It's going to have to wait though. I've already done lots of 1000's of miles on it, and it hasn't given way yet.

Hi,

Thanks for all the input.
I am sure it is a mechanical noise rather than tyres, no unusual vibrations just the whining noise. I did try to record it but nothing worth while. I experimented coming home and found it noisiest at 25mph in fourth with minimal throttle. Difficult to say where coming from but if I had to say then would say back half of the car. Perhaps that is the next thing to do; to remove the prop shaft and jack up to feel the bearings again. Something to tackle over the weekend. As for DMF, please no, I did replace the original unit with a secondhand unit that only had a bit more than a tooth of movement rather than the original which had 3 teeth movement. I can not remember the make of clutch I fitted it might have been Valeo. I find that a really difficult bit of being a home mechanic; selecting which make of spare part to fit. I am on my second set of glow plugs and I recon they are on the way out again.....

thanks again all.

I wonder if it would be worth taking the rear prop off and drive round the block and see if the noise is reduced?

Grrrrrr, can I just take the prop off and drive around or do I need to tie anything up?

Also

Datatek, having just googled testing VCU it would appear jack up a front corner with hand brake on and try to rotate wheel, wheel should turn slowly, is that correct? Assume it will not turn if VCU seized?

thanks.

I don't think so but never tried it! Take the prop off completely. 9/16 nuts, I think.

You need a breaker bar on the hub nut to check the VCU. Turns slowly with steady pressure. Has to be in neutral IIRC.

I can turn mine just by gripping the tyre, hard going though.
handbrake on, box out of P.

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the time to get back to you but I have know done both the tests and the wheel turned slowly but steadily when checking the VCU. I did that a few weeks ago. Tonight I actually got around to dropping out the propshaft. There was a noticeable amount of movement and when I took it for a drive the whiny noise was not there.

So rear diff it is. But what to do? Change for another secondhand unit, service (some how?) or not really worry, except in 4 weeks time we will be on holiday touring the Loire in France, with family and all the kit on board. Looks quite a lot of work and the real problem of getting it over to Jersey.

thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

thanks.

I would replace with a recon one. At least that way you know you won't have to do the job again for a while.

I've not replaced a diff. RAVE makes it look straight forward. You can unbolt the rear hub assemblies and just slide the half shafts out of the diff, but the years of accumulated corrosion and seized nuts and bolts mean I'll be getting a garage to do mine when the time comes!

Would check the oil level and condition (and renew) before you buy a recon - big metal bits not good!

Ashcroft transmissions for a re-con diff. No affiliation.
