evening gents,
a bit of advice please
my 89 2.5td defender has a transmission noise when under load that makes it sound like a ww2 lorry, its fine on a trailing throttle, or coasting but when the accelerating it has a deep loud whine, the previous owner acknowledged this, and gave me a discovery rear axle to remedy the problem, when i bought the vehicle, i haven't fitted this as the noise seemed to come from the front, so is disconnected the rear prop and the noise persisted, i've replaced the rear prop and taken off the front prop, and the noise completely disapears, my diagnosis is that the front diff/axle needs replacing, before i aquire one can anyone else suggest some checks,(the oil level is good, but the front axle is wet) to avoid purchasing/replacing/fitting a good or duff item.
also does a discovery axle fit, as there are some being broken locally, is there anything to look out for when buying a disco axle, model/year/ancillaries etc
thanks

Any luck sorting this out?

Mine seems to have a transmission noise coming from the front too... only under power... almost sounds like knobbly tyre noise??

Hubs feel cool after a run... recently changed all oils....

I have the same issue. No clear culprit even after attempted diagnosis by experienced workshop. Oil in both boxes clean, but replaced anyway. Only whines when power is applied. Could it be the input gear on the transfer box?
