I went out last night to enjoy the weather and help a few less fortunate people who don't have landys, but when nearly home noticed a horrible noise from the engine.

It was from the front and there was a slight burning smell.

Just taken the belt off and found the Big pulley where the viscous fan would go has a little play and feels like worn bearings. Is this part replacable or repairable and what is the part called?

Cheers

I believe that pulley is attached to your water pump. If it has play in it, the pump is shot. Any temp problems recently or can you find a little drip of coolant on the bottom of your water pump?

The water pump is a differen pully. I've checked again and believe its the viscous fan pully. Hope it lasts a few days as I need the truck in this weather.

Sorry. I am using my phone so poppIng in to check. Just been out before all the shops shut.

Mine is a 300tdi. I was wondering if I could remove the bearing and keep the pully. I dont use the fan anyway.

Sorry. I have had 2x tdi's since then.

Ill change it when I'm next on me laptop.

Should know by now to give all details in my question. Im hardly a newby.

That bearing is part of the front cover, you can replace it but it's a bitch and needs a good press. And the bearing alone will run you £60.

Mine is shagged too, wobbles all over the place, sounds like crap. I struck lucky and caught another complete front cover on eBay for 40 notes, bearing in mint condition. Just waiting for the next service to fit her.

Thanks. I have been considering a belt change but breaking it in April when the MOT runs out due to rot so a bit loathed to spend much on her.

How long has yours lasted? The wife will use it for work in this weather otherwise it's just a toy/workhorse.
