2002 TD5 - Garage just replaced fuel filter as the car was struggling to start if left overnight. They also mentioned that they thought the fuel pump was noisy. When the ignition is switched on there is a quite prolonged humming from the back of the car - is this the fuel pump and is a noisy one a problem? Sorry for all these questions but me and my son are on a learning curve!

Shouldn't be a problem... I got an aftermarket cheap one after my original pump packed up and it sounds like a big , angry wasp! Very noticeable outside the vehicle, especially round the back of course.
If you turn on the ignition, but don't start the engine, the pump will shut off after a while. However, when the engine's running, then so is the pump.

When the pump packed up, it was very quiet: No noise at all! :p :D

It was worn copper washes in the injectors that was causing the problem, diagnosed by ex Landrover mechanics, so could have wasted money on a new fuel pump with the local BMW/VW garage. Glad we have now found the ex Landrover guys who also charge very reasonably - £90 for the washers.
