My overdrive on my 88 2a makes quite a din when engaged; is it usually one thing that could cause it or is it not that easy to diagnose?

First suspect is the needle bearing on the input drive "clutch".

As rob says. You could pop it off the transfer box easily enough and have a look in with a torch. Here's a video that shows what you're looking for on the clutch sleeve..

Note that bit will be in the transfer box behind the mainshaft nut, it won't come off with your overdrive.

Surely that bearing is being driven even when overdrive not engaged?

When the OD is out both inner and outer spin at the same speed as the unit is locked.

Good point Rob forgot that , sold my overdrive a few year back when I went Ashcroft HRT .
