HI ALL
IM NEW TO LAND ROVERS AND HAVE JUST AQUIRED A 1965 11A. DURING SLOWISH TEST DRIVE GEARBOX WAS NO PROBLEM, HOWEVER ON THE JOURNEY HOME I NOTICE A LOUD WHINE/RUMBLE FORA FEW SECONDS WHEN I EASE OF THE THROTTLE, PERFECT WHEN UNDER LOAD. IM AN EX ENGINEER WITH A FULLY EQUIPED WORKSHOP, IS THIS A REPAIR I COULD UNDERTAKE, OR DO I AQUIRE ANOTHER BOX?. ANY ADVISE ON THIS PROBLEM WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED
REGARDS

Does it pop out of gear when you take your foot off accelerator?
(More common in the lower gears)

If so then you may want to consider a box swap.
I would replace the EP90 in the Gearbox and Transfer box first and then run it for a few days.
Also check the old oil for swaf.

Hi Clivees
Thanks For The Reply .it Does Not Jump Out Of Any Gear At Any Time And The Whine Only Occures In Overrun Just As You Ease Of The Throttls For May Be 1/2 Seconds

Normally they go like that for years as long as theres not too much backlash, if you want to hear gearbox noise have a ride in my Series One at 70 mph with the overdrive in, it's been like that for years, ear defenders are handy. That was until the gearbox decided oil was for spreading under it not keeping in it so it's coming out next week !

sounds like the ley shaft. as already said it'll go on for ages noisey and unless you get a recon box, a second hand one could be worse than you got already. regards cartman690...:)

Personally I'd dump the oil from the box and see if owt drops out with it first.
If not , see how she goes.

Regards WP.

Sounds like a layshaft or bearing wear As you have the equiptment , You can get parts and rebuild kits from Legs. and download the workshop manual from the Est. website can be found in this forum by searching.
