HI,

I have a 200 tdi Defender 110 hard top and in the last month ive done 10,000 miles through America and Canada. I love the truck and the engine but now that I have fixed all its problems I would like to try to cut down on noise! I have been thinking of taking the wings off and bed lining them as well as the hood, inside of the cab and firewall.

just wondering what people have done to cut down on noise of the tdi!

I just starting running 5w40 full syn and that's really made a difference

I found that a rubber mat on the load area made a lot of difference. I have heard that camping mats are a cheap effective way of sound proofing which ill be trying when I've finished my rebuild.

has anyone ever tried coating there bulk head with fiberglass mat and polyester resin? I was thinking of giving that a go then bed liner over it for protection

If your doing alot of mileage at higher speeds, a disco transfer box will make things much quiter and improve fuel ecomony a small bit too. A 200tdi might suffer abit with the longer gearing though.

There's truck mudflaps underneath the mats of mine in the footwells aswell as a mudstuff center console that I have lined the underside of and they make a big difference. Have a conveyor belt in the rear tub then too which helps abit too but bein a crewcab, it might help much more in a hardtop.

I'll be lining underneath the bonnet, inside of front and rear bulkhead and the floor with soundproofing and heat insulation in a few weeks time when I take out he dash to fit some gauges, few extra speakers and things.

Should be really quite then... Well for a Defender anyway :p

Be careful what you use for soundproofing though as many linings that arent strictly meant for vehicle sound deadening will absorb moisture and become very damp or wet if you take a plunge into a river or even just from condensation over time and will lead to corrosion of the panels from the inside out.

I have been thinking of the disco box for the defender I just haven't had the time to buy and fit one I am running a big vnt turbo so pulling the gears wont be difficult!

has anyone tried exhaust wrap to reduce noise I know its ment for heat reduction but it cant make it louder! plus keeping the heat in the pipes will make death valley a bit more inhabitable!

I have been told the 300 tdi is quieter then the 200 but whats the difference what makes the 300 quieter and is it really that much quieter?

Best combination i have founs is rubber matting throughout then use 4- 10mm closed cell foam in all other areas. Especially the doors and pillars. Makes a world of difference.
