hi, one of the issues to sort on my 2001 4.0 p38 is a tapping noise coming from what sounds like the drivers side front wheel, it sounds just like there is a stone in the tyre, even speeds up and slows down with the speed of the car but as soon as i touch the brakes it stops!!! any ideas anyone? cheers.

Stone in the disc shield? ABS sensor in tight? Pads not worn away and flapping about?

just noticed yesterday that i'm pretty sure it goes away when turning!?
also been told that i would have to change the whole hub and not just bearing, £350+vat!!!!! is this correct?

Depends if you do it yourself. The Timken bearing is about £70, I think? You need a big press to get it in and out though and if you f*ck it up you're in trouble.

You can get the whole hub assembly with a Timken bearing from somewhere around Brum for about £200. Might have been shop4autoparts. Check @MrGorsky 's posts as he did his recently. It isn't a bad job but the hub will be welded in there nicely. You might get some pointers from my CV replacement post in the Technical Section. Make sure any replacement has the Timken bearing though.

And be careful it's not a Chinese fake Timken bearing
