i have a auto box and when pulling away there is a whine from 1st and 2nd gear but if you floor the car it goes.... or the roar from the V8 takes over! if you hold the car in 1st it whines on the over run.....
how would i know if its the gearbox or not???

what kind of noise ?
screaking ? scratching ? squealing ? it may be the environment filters within the exhaust box !!

the sound its like gear whirlling sound and gets higher with the speed of the car but then it stops when it gets over 35 40mph at 50 and above the car has hardly and whines or rattles at all. i would have thought the transfer box would whine in all the gears and all the way to the max speed. I have only had a quick look under the car when i got it but know there is no gearbox fluid leaking but should check the level. The car has just covered 100k its got fsh stamps in the book.
I know there is a shudder from the streering when going over bumps at 50+mph and found the front streering ram leaking oil...... i just wouldnt have thought the ram could dampen that much shudder......

of course you checked the oil of the gear box !!
i think the problem is somthing else , because if it's a gear box problem the noise must persist during running slowly or speedly >>>
i hope you find the noise source ...
regards
charbel .

i have been still on the case to find out what is making the noise and that i have worked out that the noise is in 1st and 2nd gear or more to the point up to 30mph but goes after that........ i have been reading on here and something cought my eye and that was about a tranfer box chain....... what sort of noise do they make and at what speed...?????

i reckon if the sound goes at 30mph - that aint gonna be the chain drive - coz that is being used all the time - it is most likely when yu change into top gear - that locks the gearbox in a "straight though" position and not through any lay shafts - so I reckon its a lay shaft bearing thats causing the problem.

i did think it might be the gearbox because when you hold the gearbox in 1st gear and backed off the throttle it makes the same sound, but in D it would free wheel and not be locked in 1st...... is it a bitch of a job to have the bearing changed?????? i take it the box will have to come out!

Thanks for the link i'm toooo far from them but will look at a local company in essex...... i was told of one in harlow that was good.....
I've had a bad time with auto gearbox on a old 24v granada scorpio fitted by stephens engineering in north london...... had 3 boxes in 2 years!
nightmare:eek:
