Morning all just had my first breakdown. injector light flashed up n cut out. Got it running for about 10 secs. Sounds like fuel starvation to me. But did have a lil puddle of fuel on floor but no sign where it's come from. Any ideas?

Hi

Nothing wrong with running SVO I’ve covered 50K miles on SVO however noticed a drop in temperature?? You will need to winterise your fuel, easiest way is to add 50% dino diesel but this is expensive! Or cheaper you can add up to 20% petrol (current temperature you shouldn’t need more than 10%)

It sounds like you have a blocked fuel line or knackered lift pump, due to the thicker fuel you have been asking it to pump!

Running on alternative fuel is all about getting the viscosity as close to Dino Diesel as possible.

I only put in 10 liters and tank had some derv left so wasn't neat. Been running svo for over a year with no issues till now

OK

remover the fuel filter (but put something under the filter head to catch fuel in)

remove relay 12 and bridge the terminal that is the opposite way to the other 3 (one closest to battery) to 12 volt + and you should hear the lift pump running and also get fuel in your catch pot

no fuel?? you either connected the wrong terminal (numbnuts) or fecked pump!

You MUST mix it at least 50/50 even in summer and NEVER run it neat. Running neat will eventually lacquer and gum up the inside of the injection pump. It also leaves fatty deposits in the fuel filter and lift pump clogging them up.

Ive thought a few times about swoping to svo but hear loads of problems like this! Is it realy that bad?
What are the pros and cons
Do I add anything other than diesel+oil?

You can mix it with petrol this is much cheaper! but not at 50/50 unless you like loud bangs!!

80/20 MAX when running petrol

diesel you can mix in any qty

I have covered many many miles on SVO no issues

What about sub-zero temperature will it thicken or do you just add a touch more dilute?
Where do you get it and how much?

The 50/50 referred to was diesel/cooking oil. 50/50 in summer 75/25 in winter. Get too greedy and you will cause harm.

Costco about £16 for 20 litre

Fine down to -14 with 20% petrol mix

Don't use it anymore as have an alternative fuel supplier now

Interesting I can get rapeseed oil in a 1000L ibc at cost from a company I deliver to regularly but never went any further cos I hear so many storys of it killing engines
Might be worth having a word with him is that the same mix?

Any performance loss worth noteing?

Yes, too much SVO and you get lumpy tick over and lower top speed.

you can get round this buy using proper Bio or thinning to roughly the correct viscosity. Remember also that the thicker juice also puts extra strain on the lift pump, but I think you’ve recently replaced yours??

As a guide keep a sample of whatever you have in the tank in a container outside this will give you a visual of what is happening in the tank, plastic jar not glass in case it freezes!

Final warning, anything rubber will go sticky and soft so expect leaks around the FIP if you have the original seals, the modern ones seem to last longer. And also replace the spill pipes for silicone if going bio (as silicone is no good for use with dino diesel) or Teflon lined stuff if going SVO

Good memory yea the in tank pump is about 3 month old now
Think I might give it a go! Maybe not just yet but when weather starts to warm up then ive a few months to get used to the mix my car likes

It's not a question of what your car likes more what it needs. Viscosity is very important to avoid problems.

i use new veggie oil mixed with dino or bio the same rates as wammers said and have had no probs just remember to change your fuel filter a bit more regular than usual
