hiya ive just bought a 300tdi the guy i bought it off said he thought the transfer box had broke started the car today in nuetral and in gear and in hi and lo ratio.there was no strange noises and its not jumping out of gear just not moving forward or backwards could it be the clutch or is it tansfer/gearbox hope someone might be able to help cheers chris

Sounds like transfer box to me, gonna cost you a few quid for a recon or if your lucky bag a bargain from a scrappy or fleabay. good luck with it tho karl

Have you tried it in diff lock?
If it moves in difflock then it could be either a front or rear half shaft that's gone.
If this is the case, dis-engage difflock, put it in gear, and have a look underneath, one of the propshafts should be turning. If its the front prop turning then it will one of the front half shafts and if its the rear prop....

If no prop shafts are turning and it doesn't move with difflock engaged then its back to the transfer box

reason i thought clutch is because i can put into gear without touching the clutch so i thought maybe the clutch wasnt releasing

R380 boxes are prone to wearing out the splines on the gearbox output shaft. You then lose drive between the gearbox and transfer box. Usually means a re-con gearbox. I believe you can check them by taking the round plate off the back of the transfer box and having a look at the gear and shaft.
Have a look at Ashcroft transmissions website. Think it explains it there.

lt230 transfer box ring of bolts at top back. remove the plate.
the gear will come out with some fiddling. Also the later gears are cross drilled
(4 holes which is ment to stop it)
