Hi All,
Can somebody help with a diagnosis, I have a 1998 Discovery with a 300tdi engine manual gearbox.
I was driving at about 50kmh yesterday and all of a sudden lost drive to all wheels, there was no noise at all, no oil loss, when I came to a halt, I tried engaging diff locks and nothing, put it in gear with the engine running checked underneath and no props turning. I can start it in gear and no movement, I can select all gears easily without using the clutch with the engine running.
Not sure what happened, I could do with getting it home somehow under its own steam as we're not allowed to tow another vehicle here in Lanzarote.
Hope somebody can help please.

Sounds like it's in transfer neutral? Have you tried high and low?

Thanks for the quick reply, yes I have tried all the options, lo/hi, difflocks in /out.
I checked all the linkages underneath and they are all in place.

Does the gearbox go into gear without using the clutch with engine running? If so then something has happened to the clutch, if not then I'm thinking maybe sheared splines or somethint

Hi munster, thanks for the quick reply.
Yes I can engage all gears easily with the engine running without using the clutch.
I did think it might be a clutch fault as previously when depressing the clutch there was a bit of whirring / rumbling noise which I thought was probably the thrust bearing.
Just looking for clarification from you knowledgable guys on here.

It does not matter if its the clutch or gear box the lot has to come off, for repair or replacement, its probably the clutch plate or pressure plate , but when its all off just replace all the seals, and new clutch after checking the gear box and transfer box are all fine to go

if you intend to do the work yourself there are literally hundreds of video's on you tube that will show you how to do the job, if you are then best to remove the transfer box on it own first, to reduce the weight the the gear box, , same goes for seal etc lots of video's, it worth watching them
