Hi I have a range rover P38 2.5 diesel, after sorting out a vibration due to the viscous fan, I had to replace the two belts, the smaller one to the air con, kept on coming off even though I tried to tighten the tentioner as much as I can.

The aircon doesnt work anyway so I left it off, but at around 30mph I now get a vibration when accelerating. Would this be due to air con belt not being connected to the crank shaft causing it to vibrate as its out of balance and if so, if I dont put the belt back on can I just get balanced?

Having the air con belt or not shouldn't cause this. Mine's run both ways without any difference. The belt does (from memory?) run on the harmonic suppressor part of the pulley - if you've wanged the tension up on the belt you may have pulled it sideways? But I would doubt that would cause engine vibration. If so you will be able to see it 'throw' - distinctly wobbling as it rotates. When you say 'vibration' - how bad is it? Is it just something you notice or is it a real false teeth rattling type?

its from about 30 as you accelerate up to about 50 then it stops. Its not false teeth rattling bad but the steering wheel etc is vibrating quite badly. I only wondered if it was that as it seems have only happened recently after the belt came off and I left it off.

But may just be coincidence!

The vibration damper in the pulley may be breaking up, also there must be a reason why the belt will not stay on, something is out of alignment.

If it's throwing the belt the pulley could be swashing - wobbling. If so, and if it's bad enough to make the engine vibrate, you'll be able to see it with the engine ticking over. New or good second hand ones are pricey I've heard. I can't visualise if you could change the pulley with just the radiator out?

Another thought, if the vibration goes at 50mph is that when top locks in or is it related to specific revs through the gears.

well I found out what the problem was the prop shaft bolts next to the gear box. One had sheared and the others were loose. Replaced them all with high strength bolts and no running lovely and smooth!!! I dont know if having the air con belt off exaserbated the problem.

Nothing to do with aircon belt. Slack bolts exasperated the problem.
