So, I talked the Mrs into letting me buy a defender, and now I think I've bought a lemon. I've had it a month and so far it's has a prop, a slave cylinder and now what seems a more severe problem. A pal gave me a call as he'd broken down and wanted a tow. It is about a mile away so I popped to get him. After pulling him back no problems I jumped in to start it and it hesitated and then fired up with a ploom of white smoke (never previously happened). Parked it on the drive and did some investigating, it has used all coolant, after refilling and letting it tick over the smoke continued and along with that had what seemed to be oil ****ing out of the exhaust. So I turned it off. The mate that I pulled home popped over so I went to show him and now the thing has completely locked, it won't turn over. There isn't any creaminess in the oil or on the dipstick. Checked turbo veins to see if there was any movement (inlet side) and it is solid. So I'm stumped, I know more about gas turbine engine than I do about diesel. But I'll do it all myself and was looking for some experience to give me some insight.

Pop glow plugs out and turn it over see of anything comes out of the holes.
What engine is it?
 
A very good way to check , But.
Be careful, sometimes the glow plugs have a habit of sticking and may break.
Not something you want to be aggressive with.

Bit of an update. I've just looked again at what is coming from the exhaust. And I'm 90% sure it's actually water. Very black sooty water. Any ideas gents?
 
Is the starter motor trying to turn it over?

Or is the starter motor / solenoid knackered?

Yea the starter motor tries to turn it over. But it's like it's locked up. Water on top of Pistons if that possible?
 
Then as above , pop out the glow plugs carefully, turn it over by hand.

See what you get out.

Then it sounds like you will be taking the head off.

My guess would be cracked head, only saying that as that quite often leads to coolant from the exhaust, is your expansion tank pressurised when cold? Although HG failure normally precedes a cracked head ( not always ).
Either way, head off is a good place to start! Bit of a bitch as you've only just got her, but everything's fixable on a Landy! Best of luck.

In one word...no. Generally a cracked head can't be properly repaired. This is worse case scenario and only a judgement from the given symptoms. 200 tdi heads are getting rarer, but are still obtainable.
Best to have a look once you get back from hols, don't let the Landy spoil it!
