Lush!

The Hindhead tunnel one's good too.

Just as he hits 60 there's a white articulated horsebox coming the other way...

That's me!!!

whats the deal with him having an iceberg block? where did he find that?

also where does one pick up a rv8 billet crank these days?

Iceberg block is from Mr Eales - who develped the 4.2 for Landrover, and later the 4.5 for the original Dakar racers.

He has a few stashed in his workshop.

His 5.2 engine is legend - I put one in my TVR Griffith - still going strong.

He still has his road car(1990 RRC) with all the dakar bits and the 4.5. which Damon Oorloff at Kingsley Cars will be restoring for him soon.

I would think that unit cost 7500 plus VAT.

My friend Colin has just bought a brand new 4.6 from Mr Eales with the same cam as the video, internally balanced, for 2600 including VAT and delivery

he will bolt on a pair of nice rebuilt heads from a 4.5 chimaera, freeflow ashley headers and hey presto - 280bhp and over 300lbs torque in his 50th anniversary defender - lovely.

so whats the bore and sroke for the iceberg- remind me, also would be interested to know the same for the 4.5 he does

I believe I am right in saying..........

Bore and stroke for 4.2 same as eventual LSE engine

block has all sorts of strengthening bits done as it was intended to run on diesel with a turbo so would have been 15.1 compression ratio or something mad like that.

His 4.5 engine is a mildly stroked vesion of the same.

Hi guys :)

Nige has a marathon thread on LR4x4 for this called the V8 porn rebuild thread

in fact here's a link

The V8 Porn Rebuild Thread - Tools and Fabrication - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum

the basics are that this was an Eales engine built for a Maserati racer a good few years ago IIRC, and is now estimated to cost £14000 new

the thread started in 2010 so has taken a good 3 years to get this running in the vehicle as you see it today.

the thread is an incredible read so i recommend it!

that block sounds good, did he have iceberg cranks too?

well- sort-of - the crank, and therefore the 4.2- litre displacement were direct from the project

the bore is the same as the 3.9

Funny how things come full circle - 25 years ago John was working on a 4.2 V8 turbodiesel for the Range Rover - now they have a 4.4 V8 diesel as their star performer!!!!!!!

No - if I remember correctly the ones made for the project were forged - whether any remain I do not know.

I will ask John when I speak to him next week.

In any case he has the cranks for his race motors specially heat treated and 'tuftrided' and cross-drilled to make them lighter so they rev quicker.
