After looking at nearly 11 RRC's recently and not finding a good one I have decided to push my budget out and get a defender (what I originally wanted)

I looked at one today and its was really good, no major rust anywhere...makes a nice change from the recent RRC's! Its a 1995 90 truck cab, clean condition. The engine (300tdi) seems excellent considering the 125k on th clock.

Couple of problems that I need some advice on:

1. theres a strange whine noise when doing 30'ish MPH in 3rd gear. Didn't hear it in other gears but I didn't test it much at that speed. The noise is loud'ish and sounds like its coming from the front or the middle - any ideas? will it be easy to fix (think its an R380 box) - could it be a joint or something?

2.theres oil leaking from the engine and transfer box (if that is the large cylinder thing in the middle!?) - do they all do this?

3. the cab body is clean but inside there was some water in the footwells and around the seats, couldnt see any rust under the rubber matts - could this be from off roading or a leak?

but 2 yes they leak oil always and furever
3 they all leak

I guess I can put up with the leaks...not sure about the gearbox noise. Worst case seems to be a £600 swap out with a refurbished one which isn't too bad considering.

One thing I did notice is that he glow plug warming light on the dash has the choke graphic on it. Does this mean its been changed or has it been converted to a 300TDI or something?

thats standard - all petrols and doosels have the same light, tis for choke on petrol and glow plugs on the diesel. The cylinder thing in the middle, from what i can think, is possibly the flywheel housing? if its between the engine and the gearbox then it is, and its just engine oil from there - get used to it if its and the back of the gearbox and has the shafts to the front and rear axles coming out of it, then its transfer box, which may also leak. My old one did - i just topped it up every few months!

if yer landy doesn't leak oil then yer in the ****e coz it means yer running it dry.
