Hi,

Well after a weeks searching, and a few outbids I have finally bought a landy 88 series 3.

I know nothing, and I mean nothing about them... i have ordered a haynes manual. I have bought some servicing stuff... but will need some help no doubt.

I read somewhere that oil changing them is different to normal cars?.. i.e you fill the sump not the rocker cover etc?

Any ways I pick it up tommorow.... but here is a pic.. I welcome any advice, or hints and tips welcome.:blabla:.. ive definately got the buy

pdf Land Rover Manuals | Landroverweb.com will sort your manual needs. Depending on which engine you've got there's either a screw on filler cap on the top of the rocker cover (not to be confused with the breather) or a twist off cap (a bit like the radiator cap) on a tube on the near side of the engine. Or possibly both! It helps if you tell us where you are and what engine's in it.
 
welcome and congrats on your series 3, you come to the right place for advice, some knowledgable people on here, but not me i am new but have series 3
 
I'm in Durham.... in the north east.

Its running the standard 2.3 diesel... all completely original....

thanks for the manuals.

Is there any mods that people do to make to more reliable/ easy to live with... quite keen on keeping it standard.

I'm driving it back 120 miles tommrow whats a good spped to drive it back on the motorway?
 
50 mph and annoy the wagons, 60mph if your ears can take it.

regular service and keep it in good running order mechanically. presume you've seen it running?
how much, what mileage, what condition?

45mph, if it'll go that fast:D Even if it will you'll be deafened and it'll feel like it's going to explode at any moment.

Yeah heard it running.... its done 158k, had a large folder and has been maintained by a local garage for last ten years... has lots of history.

Seems to look ok, reckons needs some slight welding for next mot... was on the mot advisory but wasnt the bulk head was floor panel... Mot is in 4 months.

I paid £1050 for it... is that a fair price with 6 months tax?
 
Nah, dude I have the standard 2.25 diesel, it does 60mph on the motorway no problems. Keep the original engine!

All the tyres in good order for mud snow or on the road,

condition of chassis is prety good but I am not by any means technical, she goes to the garage for the work thats needed, he told me on her last visit the door post outriggers would be needing some atention at £50 a side to fit as i would have to supply the part its not to bad,
 
Good on ya mate,i was a newbie as well i picked mine up from morten in marsh past oxford.

I drove it back to eltham on the kent borders 120 ish miles and i thought blimey will it make it cos of all the racket it was making!!

It did'nt miss a beat but the motorway was hard work .

good luck on the looooong trip home lol.
 
I have read loads of ebay motors listings and you get to tell which ones are the dodgy ones, and that one doesnt sound like a con artist.
The outrigers are not hard to replace, neither are they expensive, some knowledge of welding is required though.

probably about average pricewise, but thats without seeing it.

Well I got home... it was great.

Big smile on my face, slightly due to fear and the fact that there are alot of diesel fumes.

The Landy is exactly as described, it has a slight fuel leak from one of the banjo bolts on the fuel, pum he did just repalce this banko bolt so may need nipping up.

Its not leaking loads but enough for a headache in the cab, and for the guy behind to tell me it stinks:)

Few questions I ahve if anyone can help

The car has 3 free wheel hubs, a one new one that needs fitting... is this difficult? and whats the crack with free wheel hubs ?

What colour is the Blue? is it marine blue please?.. just need to do some touching up.

I will add some pics at the weekend
