Firstly.....losing power intermittently....mainly going up hill...but also happens on flat...bearly can reach 90mph...she used to have no bother reaching and sustaining the speed. Most times will be accelerating then all of a sudden.....dies.....sometimes you can feel the power kick back in....WHATS GOING ON???? Also getting engine managemnt light coming on intermittently....Either braking it will flas on or pushing accelorator pedal???? Please tell me there is a cure!!!!! Freelander TD4 02 plate?????

NO. You are now out in the open and exposed to the whole forum.:p

As people offer advise or opinions you can then let them know as and when you try them out or reject them. Don't forget to let us know what it turns out to be. Hopefully you can help somebody else fix their vehicle by posting the results of your own battle.:)

No probs. Have a good night at work. Good luck with sorting out your freelander.:)

Adding to the thread Ratty kindly started for me (not sure how to put my 2nd PM to ratty on with ADDED PROBLEMS!!!.....masses of smoke cumin from exhaust (light grey/blue colour) usually when initially excellerating off, but occasionally other random times...leaving the car behind me totally invisible and no doubt well P**ED off!!! oil cumin up through dipstick (proper P**ing out when engine running)....however when the dipstick plug thingis pushed in securely its temporaly solving this!! Although im pretty sure this IS NOT suppose to happen anyway!!

I have read that the crankcase breather filter could be full of crap and causing this prob.....had bloke fit a new control booster thing yesterday(mechanical technical term)??? for loss of power....had diagnostic show this fault along with the fuel pressure sensor....went for the cheaper option 1st...not had chance to test yet...but crossing everything that the power prob is fixed (will update)...he did have a look for the breather filter thing...but couldnt find it...apparently its in a different place to mine to my haynes manual.....got some links now to hopefully help locate this.....Will stop babbling now:focus:....any suggestions, advice and cures are very welcomed and much need.......Im blonde and in ditress:doh:

does the filter(when located) need to be just cleaned or replaced with new?? If so is it a BMW part??? Got a part No.?? (F.L TD4 02 plate 2.0)

Is it an easy ISH job to do or trained man job?? How long will it take??....................

thanks for the link...sounds same prob..."booster control" which i have had changed yesterday. Have not had chance to check yet if still losing power or cured...Got a few hills to climb when driving home at 7am....guna floor it and see!!

hi quick up date re loss of power after having boost control changed Did a few hill climbs on way home and gave it some on the peddle....seemed to respond loads better BUT lost all power on flat.....foot right down wouldnt budge from 55mph, 2000revs (think was 2000) anyway nothing past 55mph with foot to floor! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! Could it be MAF????
Can feel my purse is going to get alot lighter......

before you do anything, change the crankcase breather filter.

it's not something to clean, just change. the original land rover item is like a foam mesh. the fact that oil is being forced up the dipstick tube shows this filter is blocked to a dangerous degree. this is leading to the crankcase being pressurised and forcing oil up past the dipstick.

you should consider this a matter of urgency, as it could lead to a sudden drop in oil pressure with resultant engine damage.

the land rover item costs around £16 and should take an hour to fit for someone with a small amount of knowledge. it is not hard to do.

take the top cover off the engine, then behind the injectors is something that looks like a syphon cover out of a wc, and the filter is under there.

you will need to VERY CAREFULLY move the injector fuel line to one side and take the cover off. foam filter underneath, by the sounds of it, yours will look like a smokers lung.

be careful with the injector fuel lines, as these are plastic and prone to fracturing when disturbed if over stressed.

there is an alternative part from bmw which doesn't have the foam filter in it, and doesn't block and can be cleaned. there are a number of threads on here which I will try to dig out for you.

good luck with this, we are here to help

here is the link to the thread about the BMW part, also has piccies of what you are looking for in the engine:

Hi,
Im working the forum out and how to use it!!! :D Just need some help with the TD4 please.
Had boost control changed yesterday went out this am....seems to manage the hills now without almost dying a fast death.........BUT......Now got no power top of hill on flat!!!! would not budge past 55mph even with foot to floor.
I have read lots of posts think guna try the MAF....any other ideas anyone? Is it easy to change or will it take trained hands and knowledge???
Also need to sort the oil coming up through dipstick, and masses of smoke occasionally bellowing from the exhaust............PLEASE DONT POINT ME IN THE DIRECTION OF THE LANDY GRAVEYARD!!!!!:5bangelsad2:

If oil is coming out of dipstick hole:eek: you need to get the crank case breather filter changed urgently. At this stage it is probably causing oil to be blown out of the oil seals of the turbo, hence black smoke, this is not only very bad for the turbo bearings but will also be contaminating sensors such as the MAP sensor, hence performance loss. You might want to get the induction system checked/cleaned also. Good Luck & keep us posted ;)

As I said - before - it is best to only have one thread - coz you might have seen this
