Hi all,

I'd like to replace the standard steering wheel in my Defender with a leather XS one. I have a MY07 puma 90 - I believe that's a 48 spline wheel.

When looking on ebay some of the XS wheels are new take off ones or some are MY15 but they say they will only fit on post 2012 defenders and some others says 2010.

Can anyone help me understand why that is and what XS wheel can I have for my 07 puma.

Personally don't really see the appeal of the XS wheel. Just go aftermarket if you want a nicer one.

Land Rover have used 3 different steering wheel splines over the years. Some used at the same time depending on variant/spec. Some used early on, then stopped, then used again latter on.

What makes it confusing, is two of the shafts have the same spline count, but a different diameter. So you need to check exactly what you are after. Metric and Imperial also seems to be used to describe these, which means you get multiple descriptions for the same thing.

You may want to double check this, as I'm working from memory and may have got it wrong.

36 spline (small shaft, circa 17mm)
48 spline (small shaft, circa 17mm)
48 spline (big shaft, circa 20mm)


There is a good webpage I found via Google showing this for Defenders. But I can't find it at the moment.
