I have a 2003 face-lift td5 discovery and the garage have told me I need a new transfer box. I'm in Ukraine and have tried looking. But as I understand it there are different boxes?? My car doesn't have diff Lock on the gear knob. Any ideas or help would be great.

It probably has difflock, just not the linkage. I may be wrong, but I think any LT230 with the correct ratios will suit you. Defender ones are geared differently for the taller tyres IIRC, so if you run outsized tyres you may want to consider that.

is the housing cracked or why would you need a new one? ... if it's just about play in it or some other bit worn you can buy only the part and get it within a week with £30 shipping , check this out: http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/diy-rebuild-kits/lt230-rebuild-kits.html ... first time some schmuck mecanics told me the same but i bought a master rebuild kit, a shim set and a set of gears, found some handy guys and they made it like new, cost was £210 all in for parts and the equivalent of aprox £75 labour

@sierrafery Grease monkeys don't do grease anymore. It's all replace. Few will do an engine rebuild, even fewer a gearbox rebuild. Doesn't help that people see a bill that says "Bearing £20, Labour £350" They think they are getting a better deal when they see "Gearbox £200, Labour £170"

Here in Eastern Europe it's a different "culture" in this area IMO, it's just a matter of finding the proper guys to do it.:)

Same in Estonia, repair/rebuild/re-purpose!
But like everywhere, there are less "old school" people around, skills are literally dying out!
To stay on topic though, labour is pricey, so, unless you can do the work yourself, it may well be cheaper to get a replacement.
T.Boxes go for £100 on ebay, shipping is going to be £100 to £200 depending who you use.

i'm wondering though what kind of reliability can you expect of some other's garbage for 100-200 quid... put another worn bit on your car? ... not something i can agree

There's a clunking noise while driving. They looked at the transfer box and said better to get a whole new box than repair. They said it would be cheaper. They have never cheated me before and know it's for an orphanage so I'm inclined to believe them. I've seen a transfer box with gear box on eBay.
